Has anyone ever tried to start a book swap here? As reading levels change we can swap books. I'm not sure how it really works, but we can have a thread dedicated to it and when you have something to share you can post it. As for postage, that can work two ways. We can all just use the 'it all comes out in the wash' philosophy and know that someone will send us something at some point so its ok to put out the postage money OR the person requesting the posted materials can paypal the person sharing a few $$ for postage.

Any thoughts or ideas on how to make this work?

Sounds interesting, but being in Canada makes the postage problem a bit more difficult. So we'd probably pass on that one.

We could do one by region too... Canadian HS'ers could swap with other Canadian HS'ers. It could be two different threads.

Great idea! I don't remember anyone has ever suggested that before. I'd love to hear the details!

I use www.paperbackswap.com for all of that. It works out really well when it's monitored outside a group. I think we talked about doing this before and it was decided that it would be hard for the monitors to keep an eye on it? I could be wrong.

Anyway....have you checked out Paperbackswap before? They have A LOT of stuff. :)

I like the idea and I have text books that we no longer use that I could offer up for anyone who wants them and will pay the shipping cost. I realize that the OP was talking about literature but I do have texts that I am no longer using. These are school books from McDougal/Littel/Holt-the texts you would find in a school.
On the other hand, I understand why moderators might not want to do this. Of course, no one would want to feel responsible for a transaction that they have no real control over.

I guess it is up to the mods now.

I LOVE the box swaps I've seen done at PBS. Everyone lists 2-3 items to go in the "box" to start, and an order is determined for picking turns. You can pull however many things out of the box you want to, as long as you replace them with an equal number of items. You go through it 3 times or whatever and then everyone ships. So fun!!

I do agree about no way to monitor it here, though. At pbs they make you pay a credit (or for a box swap like that probably 2 credits or more) upfront and the mods hold it until all your items have shipped and been received.

Maybe we could make some sort of private group on the PBS site? I used to do that, go there a lot, etc, but haven't done it in years now. Would love a Spot spot.

Aball maybe? Amanda is the person in charge, but she isn't on often. Amy (Aball) is moderator, so that's where I'd start.

I imagine that there is a more respectful way to put this. I find your response to be extremely rude.

Actually, I don't think it was rude. She was being honest.

saying "I hate the idea" could be worded in a much better way. Share your concerns, say why you don't like it, but don't just say you hate it.

I had a feeling I would not be accepted here....

Because one person disagreed? I think we've tried to make you feel welcome. Please don't take offense when none was meant! You can bring a very unique perspective to this board which would do us all a lot of good.

She did say why she didn't like it; "I think someone will end up getting shafted."

In my PM it was just 'I hate it'. Disagree is one thing, but do it in an adult and respectful way. When someone comes up with what they think might be a great idea to have someone use the word 'hate' when responding is just uncalled for.

Most everyone has been really nice here, and I appreciate that, but when someone with a moderator status acts in such a way I just don't know if its the right place for me.

Obviously, I don't know what has been said in PM's. But if you chose to get offended by one person when so many others have tried to welcome you, there's nothing any of us can do about it. But no matter where you go, there will be SOMEONE who is going to offend you. That's part of life. I know the Bible has a lot to say about forgiveness; does the Koran have anything to say about it?

I would never act that way towards someone. Its not about choosing to be offended, like I'm overly sensitive. It was not a nice way to respond. I certainly don't expect it from a moderator.
