Does anyone else's children have dark circles under their eyes? DS has had them off an on for approx. 6mths (or that's about when I started noticing). I hate the way it makes him look sickly, and it worries me because I can't figure out a cause. I've looked around online and it mainly says sleep deprivation is generally NOT the cause. Is there anything I should be looking out for?
Does your DS have allergies? That's what my DS dr. told me is causing his dark circles. There is a name for it but as of right now I can't think of it, sorry. HTH anyway.
Yes, he does....but I felt like it shouldn't be this long. There hasn't been more than 2 or 3 days in between. I think they're called allergy shiners?
Yes, that is what they are called. My DS has had them everyday since May. The Dr. also told me that some of it is shadows due to his long eyelashes, they are super long.
My middle son has them periodically and his absolutely ARE sleep deprivation. We discovered when he was 2 years old that he wasn't getting hardly any sleep - would go almost 3 full days with NO sleep and then crash for 18 hours. Has been on a melatonin regimen ever since, and it's a life-saver at our house.
Mine ARE definately related to lack of sleep. When I'm up before the crack of dawn or didn't sleep well during the night, by late afternoon I have darker circles under my eyes (and occasionally in the morning as well). I don't try to hide them, I just aim to get more quality rest.
I have had those all my life on and off they get worst at times. I really don't know what it is. I have been to tons of doctors one thing I know is they made there house payment by me trying to find out what it is and never been really told yet what it is. One says low on iron, one says not enough sleep, one says to much stress, one says allergy. So, what I do is take my pick when they start getting really dark and see what one I think it is. Maybe all them together sounds good to me.
My dgs sometimes has them. It makes him look like he's ill, although he says he feels fine. When he's with us, we don't have to make sure that he gets enough sleep, because here, he'll sleep 12 hours straight if we let him. His parents say when he's there he never takes a nap, but here he will, voluntarily. (I think there's just too much hoohah going on at their house for anybody to sleep, but I don't know because I don't sleep there.) Also, while he's here, he seldom seems bothered with allergies, and if he brings a runny nose with him when he comes, it soon clears up (most of the time). And we make sure he takes a vitamin with iron every morning he's with us because he's such a picky eater that we can never be really certain he's consuming enough nutrition from his food. Presto, dark circles and that "sunken look" disappear.
Being curious Georgette, I decided to Google this and see what it came up with and this is what I found  http://altmedicine.about.com/od/drcathywongsanswers/f/darkcircleseyes.htm
I have had dark circles under my eyes all my life and have been told that they are from allergies. I have finally found an eye cream that has lighten them up and they are not noticeable at all now!
My son has dark circles under his eyes, also. Our pediatrician says it is often from allergies (he is allergic to all kinds of outside stuff), but when they get really, really bad she tests his iron levels, and often when they are at their worst he is anemic. Lots of red meat, spinach, and a kids vitamin with iron actually helps the circles go away.
My niece has the same problem and my SIL is going to take her to the Doctor soon. I'll be curious to see what the Doc says
I am glad I saw this thread. My son has them also, and I was wondering about them the other day. He has severe allergies, both food and environmental. If he does not take his zyrtec one day, he is sick for a week. He has asked me several times about the dark circles, so not I can tell him what you said
