Ok here's the deal. Hubby and I have finally decided that we are definetly moving to Illinois. It took alot of talking and weighing the pros and cons but we finally came to that decision. We are moving at the end of November. We're hoping hubby will have a job before we move but if he doesn't were moving anyways. Now here's my issue. WE'll be staying with my parents while we look for a place to live but they live in Iowa. Do we have to comply with Iowa's homeschool laws if we are in the state for a very short time? We'll just be there long enough to find a place in Illinois to live, we're hoping less than a month. So do we have to comply with Iowa's laws or just consider ourselves visiting until we move into Illinois?

Also given the situation do you think it would be in our best interest to become a member of the HSLDA? I was thinking it would be beneficial but then again I have had no interaction with them so I didn't know for sure and thought I'd ask you guys.

Thanks for your input. And sorry I haven't been on so much. With the moving plans and job hunting on top of school I've been extremely busy. Things are so hectic around here right now that hubby and I have decided to put off trying for another child. Hopefully after we move things will settle down alot.

This post comes with a disclaimer........"I am not a legal professional and anything I post is not intended to be a sole means of information concerning homeschooling laws in the state of Iowa......"

I would say that until you change your licenses, you are not residents of the state. If anyone questions you, say you are visiting, which you are. However, if you end up staying longer than a month or so, I'd look into compliance with Iowa laws, which require a supervising teacher or testing of your kids. Let me know if you need to get in touch with a local Iowa group for advice. Burlington has a Christian group and an "in house" public school group for homeschoolers. The Quad Cities has a very large, very organized group as well, and I think it is secular.

As far as joining HSLDA..... We don't belong to it simply because I don't have the extra $100 to blow. Illinois is so incredibly easy to homeschool in that I don't foresee any problems. There is no reporting of any kind. You don't even have to prove you are teaching your kids unless the charges make it to court.

Have you decided on a city/area in Illinois yet? I'd be happy to get you a local contact if I am able, for IL or IA.

Actually we're up in the air about if we want to live in Peoria or in Fulton. It all depends on where hubby finds a job. We're hoping that he can transfer within his company which would put him working in a chicago suburb in which case Peoria would be about as far away as we could live from his job. But if he gets hired on at ADM or another Iowa plant then we could live in Fulton. It all comes down to the job thing. So far though he has resumes out all over the state of Illinois and up and down the east side or Iowa, anywhere where we think he might find a job. We're trying to stay away from living in the Rock Island area, never did feel comfortable there, and the Chicago area, want a big city but not that big but as long as it's no more than an hour and a half from where he finds a job I really don't care where we live.

Brooke, thanks for the info and the help you have been, I know we have been all over the place trying to make this decision.
