Hey fellow homeschoolers, yesterday I ran across a blog that talks about class pets. So the kids, and I thought it would be fun to share what type of pets homeschoolers have in their at home classrooms. I already have a few critters of our own to add to the list, but I would love to share what type of pets other homeschooling families have. It will all be shared in a post on my blog. If your interested in sharing your class pet with us you can let me know via the contact me page on my blog. Or you can pm me and I will send you my email. Please include a picture of your homeschool pet and tell us about them. The kids wanted me to do this yesterday, but got busy as usual so we would like to put the post up by Friday morning. It's a nice way to end a long week of school work. :D

May I send this on to a friend? She has a BUNCH of kids, and the second one (ds14) works with puppies that will become service dogs. He had the most recent one at science yesterday, and has been known to bring them with him to church. We have two dogs...nothing special!

We have a cat, and he is our class pet in the sense that he is forever trying to catch the pencils the children are writing with, or attacking their feet, messing up the number cards ds is trying to put in order, and generally being a very naughty cat. :)

We have two dogs that are our class pets, you can say since they sit on the back porch looking thru the sliding glass door, trying to get our attention all the time.

We have none. When we move I think our class pet will be a cow named "puppy"!

The animals who are actively participating in our classroom (a.k.a. dining room/living room/kitchen) are Frodo the cat, Baby the hamster and two goldfish, Deloris Floris Gorgeous and Mr. T. Nothing noteworthy as far as pets go (don't tell Frodo I said that). We have at times, though, rehabilitated animals like a one-eyed toad and a wayward snail. Our other animals stay in our outdoor classroom. ;)

This made me think of our park day we had last week where children were allowed to bring an animal to share about. As I was walking up, I was trying to determine if an animal was a puppy or a cat. Then, I heard it make a sound and realized it was a baby goat. The family joke was that it was their "foster kid". They were bottle feeding it for a friend for 6 weeks since the mother refused to nurse it. What made it so out of place was that the family it was following around does not live out on a farm, but in my cookie cutter (house 6 feet apart) community.

We have a bunch of pets but none of them are actually classroom pets. They are a part of our life and we learn from them and about them from time to time but they do not play a special role in our schooling, although they play a special role in our lives. :)

This comlpetely describes us too. We have 3 dogs and a cat. We live at the end of a road on the beautiful Louisiana bayou. People drive down here to drop off their unwanted animals & my kids seem to think that our home is a refuge for strays. We always try to find good homes for them, but sometimes the kids get really attached.

I agree with the above, although I would say we have a small zoo rather than pets!

We have 4 dogs, 4 bearded dragons, roach colony to feed dragons, 5 ferrets, 1 cat and two betta fish.

we're at 2 dogs and two cats right now, but we have had rats, degus, and this past summer we raised a orphan fawn. The newest dog, a 10 wk old boxer mix, sleeps on various people's feet under the table while we do school and one of the cats is partial to my son's lap.

Where to start.... we have 3 cats, 1 dog, 2 gerbils, 2 guinea pigs, a Robo hamster, 2 sugar gliders, 3 rats, 3 turtles, and a bunch of fish. In the past few years we've also had a variety of lizards including, but not limited to, a bearded dragon, a skink, and a couple of leopard geckos, along with some different frogs.
We use each of them as a project, studying all about their care, their natural habitats, etc.
It's just a shame we live in the city limits, or we'd have some farm animals outside, too. :)

We have two dogs...a geriatric poodle named Lily and our 10mo Chihuahua pup named Trooper. Trooper is our study buddy...and comic relief...and sometimes an unnecessary distraction. He thinks he belongs in our laps at all times...even when homeschooling. Trooper has a knack of knowing when my son is starting to get bored with his studies and will try and get him to play even though he knows he shouldn't. LOL! He's a smart one! Gotta spell some words around him...not sure what I'll do if he learns how to spell!

We have a black and white cat named Sundae. She's partial to my son-loves him to pieces. She likes to jump up on the desk and sit right in front of him while he's doing computer work, blocking the screen. She'll also jump up on his lap or sit on the table beside him. One time, he was standing at the table fiddling with LEGOS and that cat actually jumped up on his shoulder! She teetered there, all 4 legs on one shoulder! Funniest thing I ever saw-just like a parrot!

She's a distraction but she's awfully cute so we keep her!

We have a "math cat" named Callie. We call her that because sometimes she sits on my kids laps when they do their math. There is also a website called mathcats.

My 9 year old son loves animals and is a likely future zookeeper, so our class pet list keeps growing. Right now we have six cats who like to sit on textbooks; one bunny who poops on the floor and chews cords; eight fish who know my son is the one who feeds them; three hermit crabs, including one who doesn't know he's supposed to be nocturnal and frequently distracts us; and a bunch of Sea Monkeys that are part of a science experiment.

Sorry for the delay in response I did not realize I would get so many responses. Jackie you can certainly share this with whomever you like. Thanks to all for sharing about your homeschool pets. My kids are so excited, as am I. Also I could not agree with you more Emmas #1 Fan, they are certainly a loving addition to our everyday lives.

I would love to share these on my blog. I love reading about the different variety of pets you all have. If you would like to share it on the blog with us please send me a picture of your pet. You can just pm and I'll give you the email. I just started the post rolling with our own animals, and will be adding more daily. At the moment I am trying to get a picture of our gerbil, but he wont stop moving long enough for me to focus the camera, but I'll get it. Anyway if you want to check out the post you can click on the link in my signature.

We have 3 rescue dogs - a GSDx, a BoxerxStaffie and a 3 legged mutt (part Min Pin I think) and then we have 2 cats - a long haired male and a short grey cat. We also have 2 goldfish. Our dogs mostly live outside though the Boxerx is scared of storms so sneaks inside often and the little one gets in every day too and tries to steal our homeschool items to chew on outside. The cats will cuddle near us occassionally at story time.
