I'm looking for a new grammar recommendation. We've been using FLL but I personally find it to be monotonous. My son likes grammar but isn't a huge fan of handwriting. Grammar is usually the subject that I do include handwriting for the day though. I saw recommendation for Scott Foresman online writing and grammar workbook. It looks like something that I would print off the pages to do as we go along and it appeals to me but has anyone here used it? I couldn't find any kind of instruction to the teacher as to what pace to use it at. I would link but I'm too new to do so.
There are two grammar programs I'm partial to. Rod and Staff is REALLY thorough, but there's lots of writing involved. Like, no workbook, and you have to copy the work out of the textbook. The other is Easy Grammar. It has a workbook with fill-in-the-blanks, so there's not a lot of writing, but it still does a good job covering everything.
The more I use it, the more I'm finding that R&S can be done almost all orally! The highest I've used so far is the 6th, using it right now, and we can do almost all of every lesson ORALLY! Only occasionally is writing REALLY required, so that you can see a diagrammed sentence, or proper capitalization and punctuation, but almost everything else (besides composition, of course) can be done orally! OR, there are worksheets you can get to take the place of some of the writing. In fact, most of the writing only requires you to number your paper and put the correct word or phrase, or something like that, not a whole sentence. Naturally, that requires you doing it with the student, but hey if it gets it done, right?
I used The Humpties to make our grammar more fun. They are books that teach grammar using a story about the Humpties family with characters like Father Noun and Mother Verb. They are really neat and my kids enjoyed them
We just finished up FLL and moved onto Rod & Staff 2.. My daughter HATES writing too and there is a lot of it.. But she needs the practice so we will continue with it. We used Easy Grammar for a while with the older three but wanted more writing and instruction so we switched to Rod & staff for all the kids. We do spelling and English through them now... I agree that you can do it orally if you wanted to and skip all the writing..
