Can anyone help me out. Our main computer the hard drive crashed. So now I am using my son's lap top. Not enjoying that very much..... But, anyway, the screen is so light in color it's hard to tell what is what. Do anyone know how I can darken the screen? I have tried everything.

    It's a hp computer with windows 7.

On my laptop (not same as yours) the brighten/dimmer buttons are function key plus F5 and F6. Hope that works on yours too.

Not sure if it's the same as mine, but I'll give it a try:

    1. Right-click on your desktop and choose "Personalize"
    2. At the bottom left, click "Display"
    3. At the top left, click "Adjust Brightness"
    4. At the bottom, you should be able to slide a little bar that says "Screen Brightness"

If it's not the same as mine, that's probably enough to help you figure yours out. I'm sure it's similar.

Also, not to make it sound like you're stupid, LOL, but make sure you adjust the physical screen, too. If you have it tilted too far it will be hard to see.

On my HP the dim and brighten buttons are F7 and F8 They have a little image of a sun with a down arrow and an up arrow next to them. Hold down the fn button next to the ctrl button and tap the F7 button.

The keys are different on different models, but the solution should be what's quoted above: Look for the sun symbols, in blue, with up and down arrows. Hold down the Fn key while typing those 'sun' keys.

To change my brightness it F2 and F3. But, here is my next problem.... The screen for everything is white. It makes it really hard to click in a box to add information. You just can't see it. Do you know if there is a way to change that?

Go to the Start Menu (the picture of a window in the bottom left corner of your screen). Click on it and then click on Control Panel. Click on Display. You can adjust your screen resolution, calibrate color, etc. There is also a Personalization link at the bottom which could help you. If all else fails, reboot the computer. My techie friend said that 80% of all computer problems are fixed with a reboot. Hope this helps. If not, seek out a techie friend. Everybody has one of those, right?

Do you mean the the background has a plane white page insttead of a blue background or a photo? If so you need to change the personalization settings.

Right click on the background where there is no icon then select personalize. Then select a theme and you will get a background.

If you mean that the screen is over bright and that everything is washed out, try tilting the screen back and forth.

If this does not do it, try adjusting brightness with function keys as noted above.

If all above fails, Another option is to hook it to the monitor you have and see what you get. If all is well on the monitor, there could be an issue with the laptops lcd panel.
