I'm wondering if I should even bother filing the FAFSA. With my husband's income and our savings, I'm pretty sure that my boys won't receive any grants. I used the estimator and it said possibly some work-study (which we would decline) and Stafford loan (which we would decline). The only reason I'd even consider filing the FAFSA is because I don'tknow if the scholarships son has been offered are tied in with the FAFSA. I don't think they are. I'm just looking for advice from someone more experienced with the FAFSA. TIA

From what I understand you should always submit the FAFSA. Many schools tie scholarship programs to it. You also never know what type of grants a particular school has available.

Oh no. Really? I mean I know what admissions offices tell us, but really? Ugh. I guess I know what I'll be doing tonight.

Has anyone ever worked in admissions or financial aid offices that can shed some light on whether it's really necessary?

I've been wondering that myself. Your son's scholarship is based on academics and has nothing to do with need; is that correct? That's the situation we're in, too. And if that's the case, I don't see why we need to fill out the form. But, having said that, Carl is in the process of filling it out right now for Rachael anyway. She thinks it's still needed, and we don't want to take chances. Also, it could be that, even with the academic scholarships, the Government may reimburse the school if those young people are need-based, too. I don't know; that's just a guess.

Yes, his scholarship offers are all merit-based. I know we won't meet any needs-based criteria. But I"ll probably do like you - better safe than sorry.

I'll ask that question this weekend of the financial aid people at the university. I'll let you know what they say.

We completed the FAFSA just to always have the same response-we dont qualify for any grants (freebies). We make too much $$ so the govt. doesnt feel the need to give back some of the federal taxes we pay every pay check. FAFSA is just to find out if you get free $$.

Well, it's submitted. At least there was that thing at the end that automatically transferred son #1's info to son #2's form. That saved a lot of time.

Yes. And I know it's not accurate and I'll have to change it at some point. And the fact that I'm doing it for no good reason makes it even more painful

Glad you submitted it. The hard part is filling it out. You never know you might get something and then might not. But, then you wouldn't sit and wonder if you would of took the time to fill it out could you have gotten something. Good luck.
