Can anyone tell me if the state requires that we follow the state guidelines for graduation requirements? I did so with my daughter, but just wondering about my son. Also, if someone has those requirement for students graduating in 2013 and could post a link, it would be greatly appreciated! I've Googled and Binged it and haven't come up with anything yet.
I don't think anyone here is from Ms. You might call HSLDA and ask. I can answer that for my state (no, you don't!), but would hate you make a decision based on that and later find out it's wrong!
I don't live in MS either, but have family that homeschools in MS. I don't see anything listed here that says you have to follow state graduation requirements. http://www.hslda.org/laws/analysis/Mississippi.pdf I grew up on the MS Gulf Coast. Where are you from?
I was actually born and raised in Pascagoula but have lived in Vicksburg for the past eleven years. Where are you from?
I live in MS, but just moved here a month ago. I am under the impression that we don't have to follow any set guidelines as far as courses. I have been told that looking at the requirements of the college your child is pursuing is a better way to plan.
Although I can't help you with knowing if you need to follow them, a better plan is to go to your university system and see what they require if you are planning on pursuing college. They have more blanket requirements, like 4 English credits, 4 history credits (1 must be American history) for example. Since I am in Georgia, I looked at the University System of Georgia's requirements for application to state schools. These didn't include the SAT/ACT requirements that individual universities/colleges required, just a good basic plan to follow.
That's cool! All three of my children were born @ Ocean Springs Hospital and every time I go down to visit my parents, I HAVE to eat at Hartz!
I have been living in south Louisiana for the past 27 years. I have to admit that most of the time I just pass thru Biloxi / Ocean Springs on my way to Florida. Most of my family members have moved away from the area because of the hurricanes. My parents live in Hattiesburg now.
We had already moved when Katrina hit but we still owned a house about 12 miles off the beach at that time. My parents still live there but we sold our house the year after Katrina. My parents planned to move but then reconsidered and stayed.
We are in MS. MS has no laws, at this time, to tell you what you have to teach. Check you college guidelines and go from there. Keep a transcript of what classes your child has had and the given grade; whe high school is completed you write the deploma. If you would like to find more information we have a state wide forum, www.peaknetwork.org/fourms There are quite a few moms of highschoolers and college age kids. Hope this helps!
I do know HLSDA has put an alert out concerning a very intrusive law they're trying to pass in Mississippi, which could possibly turn it into a very difficult state to homeschool in.
There were so many calls/emails from homeschoolers about this law that we were asked to stop correspondance and that the bill would not proceed. Hope that's the end of it or I'm going back to Texas!
