We live in California (which has no homeschool requirements) and we are unschoolers. We are not affiliated with any kind of accreditted school. I have registered my home as a private school with an affidavitt. My son has been playing football with Pop Warner for the last 3 years (when he was in ps) and they require a report card. So, my question is: Do I make my own report card for him? Just design my own and print it out?:?

I forgot to add that this is new to us because this is our first year home/unschooling.

We don't unschool anymore, but the school work we do we use the mastery approach which means everything is essentially worked on until it is 100%. It does not lend itself to report card style grades, either.

Others suggested to me to adapt some sort of grading scale, even if it is based on effort, compliance, understanding, etc. As long as you are using something to base a grade on rather than just making it up without anything to measure against, I think it would work and be considered accurate for your grading scale.

I'm not sure how old your son is, but the book High School: A Home Designed Form+U+La helped me see how credits and grades can be given without the use of text books. The author had a set of goals for her kids to achieve to receive credit for each course. The grading scale was something like:

    C: Completed all requirements
B: Completed all requirements + good attitude
A: Completed all requirements + good attitude + showed extra effort by completing extra credit.

It wasn't exactly like that, but you can see how you can begin to have something to base a grade on without grading papers.

That's great, but I don't use grades at all. I want him to be able to play football with Pop Warner and THEY want a report card. I'm thinking of just making something to appease them.

Just be honest with it. Write up a report card that states his grade level. And that He does a great job home schooling and would be considered an A student should you ever give grades.

Honesty is best, its not like they will say he can't play at this point but his report card can be whatever you personally want it to be.

Thanks. I found a template online and pretty much copied the info from his ps report card. I think it looks good. Haha. I just hope they accept it because they did say they needed a report card from an accredited school, and I don't think we are.
