    Hi everyone

I was hoping you all might be able to give me a little advice. My oldest son is about to venture out of the world of elementary education and begin 6 grade. I have a good handle on what he should be doing in the elementary area but absolutely no idea on what he should be doing for 6th grade. I don't use a box curriculum but piece together what I need. I guess what I am looking for is maybe an idea of what subjects he should have and some suggestions on materials to use.

I know this is a rather broad question but any help, information, or referral to information would be greatly appreciated. I just have no idea where to start.

Thanks so much for the help.
    Rhonda

    My 6th grader does:
Lang Arts (Easy Grammar, Wordly Wise Vocab. Spelling Power, and Handwriting.)
English: Reading books and writing papers or other asignments plus dictation 1 X a week
    Math (Saxon)
History (Story of the World plus workbook and tests)
    Science (Holt)
    Health/PE
    Art (2 times a week)

Not much different then I do with my 7th grader and 4th grader. Just tailored to him.

I don't find it's particularly different from first-through-fifth. What have you been doing? Just carry that to a higher level! Are you at the point where you feel you need to use purchased curriculum/textbooks/kits?

You could look up online what the public schools where you live cover in each year, and use that as a guide. Usually public schools don't cover what they say nearly as well as they say they do.

    English - grammar and composition
Literature - general literature, with a little attention to the authors, and some introduction to literary analysis
    Math - just carry on!
Science - can still be just general topics, perhaps re-covering some he's done earlier but in more depth, perhaps with more structured writing about it. Reports/research papers could cover English and science in one fell swoop. If you prefer, you can choose "one topic" studies by year, for example life sciences one year, earth/space another year, etc. Then in high school he can do biology, chemistry, physics, with labs.
Social Studies - you can do history in whatever fashion you like, either chronologically or by "topic" (world, American, western civilization, old world, new world, by continents), which should include geography, cultures, economics, of whatever time/location you're studying. He has through high school to do it "all".

My 6th grader is finishing up. I would ditto with Marta with what subjects to have, with the exception of Bible. I didn't think there was much different from grades 1st-5th.

Phillip is 6th right now. He's doing:

    -Apologia General Science
    -Teaching Textbooks Math 6
-Computers - His dad is a middle school computer teacher in the public school system, and teaches a class one night a week for about four homeschooled kids.
-Mystery of History Vol. 1: Creation to the Resurrection
    -Vocabulary: Words on the Vine
-Language: He's got a good base from using R&S and Easy Grammar for the past three years. This year we're taking it easy and just doing Daily Grams for review. We'll hit it hard again next year.
-Literature: Progeny Press guides for Prince Caspian and The Bronze Bow
-Bible: He is in AWANA, and I use that for his Bible curriculum.
He also does soccer in the fall and spring, so we consider that his PE.
