I am looking at curriculum for next year for Beau. Something a bit more formal than we do. We don't do ANY formal sit down time right now (as it should be), but now that most of his learning is 1st grade, I want it to be more "sit down". I really wanted to get CLP, but we just can't afford ANY curriculum right now since our money is stretched tighter than a tick's butt (sorry). I am looking for free curriculum. I have looked at lessonpathways.com but I just don't like that for some reason that I honestly can't articulate. I also thought about doing an online PS, but we have NONE in Missouri! Seriously...none.

I just want to have a guideline to know what I'm doing for this year! Do any of you have any good resources?? The only ting I have convered is Bible lessons!! LOL Please help me if you can! Thanks! :)

Here, I can get the gov't Learning objectives, and curriculum guidlines online - free. This term I'm doing my gr 1 engish by looking at their learning outcomes and recommendations. They even have writing samples and grading scales. There are recommendations on picture books to use in teaching. It really lays out what I need to do. I have to make my own assignements, so it's labour intensive. But it's free. I've heard they do this for all the subject areas.

For math, again I'd use a list of learning objectives, but then there are tons of free websites with printables. You can print addition and subtraction drills. You can do patterning with beads and coins. For measurement let him loose with rulers and string . . .

To me, the important thing is to know what you want them to learn (So the list of learning outcomes is important), from there it's not too hard to find pages on the internet to print out, or ideas for assignments. The library is a huge help. Oh, and I have also found more things on blogs lately.

I'll try to put together a list of a few of my favourite links.

http://www.spelloutloud.com/ A blog with curriculum ideas, for elementary and preschool ages.

http://www.superkids.com/aweb/tools/math/ They have lots, but I have only used the math.

http://donnayoung.org/index.htm She has lots of helpful pages. Almost a complete learn to print section. Nature study section and other ideas.

http://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/irp/gc.php?lang=en Our provincial curriculum package - learning outcomes. It's not perfect. I leave some things out, but it gives me a good starting place of what I want to teach. You have to dig around to find the writing samples and other recommended resources. And like all P.S. curricula, there are things you won't like at all!

http://www.birds.cornell.edu/pfw/Members/EduHomeSchoolResources.htm This link will take you through some great ideas for science, and probably lead you to other places too. We did the feeder watch this year, and it's been fun.

Hope that helps a bit. You can do it for free if you put your mind to it! Keep us posted on how it goes!

    Blessings,

I'm a HUGE advocate of Ambleside for the younger years! The yahoogroups have excellent plans and even almost all the books you need formatted online. I even had math books downloaded - though I think a-zworksheets.com is awesome now and I would have used that!

When I did Ambleside, my library was my bestest friend ;) I would reserve books ahead to go and pick up - we supplemented with videos (Bill Nye the Science Guy) for science and just had fun!

First, for a first grader, the only thing you really have to do is teach him to read, teach him math, and teach him to write. For reading, you just need to teach him his letters, what sounds they make and how to string em together. Free stuff is available here http://www.donpotter.net/education_pages/blend_phonics.html

For math, all you have to do is teach him to count and the four operations. You can find lots of free arithmetics on Google book (the older arithmetics have awesome story problems!) or you could use this. http://www.cimt.plymouth.ac.uk/projects/mepres/primary/default.htm

For writing, any old book from Walmart that teaches them to trace their letters will work. I think there are free sheets like that available online somewhere too.

Hope that helps. God bless your family.

    Hi Megan,
I've had great luck searching the archives at freelyeducate dot com. Also check out the "I hit the jackpot" thread in the favorite websites forum.
    Good luck!

    Hi
Try your local library. You can get readers, and books to look at and study and get ideas for things to go off and study more deeply.practically. You can also request items in ( especially if you get lots of friends to request the item in too!).

Here are some suggestions for free first grade phonics/reading. I used these with great success to teach a tutoring student to read. I also made 2 sets flash cards with the words that he was learning. I used the cards to play matching games and to make sentences that he could read. I used magnetic letters to work on his phonics skills and reinforce what he was learning.

The next link has a plethora of free resources for educating your child. In my opinion, this is the best collection of free resources on the net.

    I second Ambleside (Charlotte Mason)!

When I began hs'ing I used that site but since then have switched over to charlotte Mason Help.

    www.charlottemasonhelp.com

The real only difference is that CM Help focuses on American History in the elementary years where as Ambleside focuses on British History in the early years. I am currently doing year four from CM Help with my dd9 (we actually just started 4th grade yesterday.......no I don't follow the traditional school year:)).

I just wanted to ad that my total amount spent for curriculum this year for the entire fourth grade year was $110. I made up my own science and use the library a lot. This will take me through 36 weeks of school so I think that is a very reasonable amoutn spent.

This is terribly embarassing, but we can't go to the Library...Yea. So it makes things difficult. :/

Oh I see....well that would be a bit of a problem.

Well many of the books listed at both ambleside and CM help you can find free online. You can print them or read them right off the screen - which is what I would do if I didn't have a library :). Most of the links for books you can find on the ambleside website.

Use gutenberg.org and other free archives to find some of the books. They should be free there and you just download them to your computer. We are thinking of using Ambleside next year as well.

For anyone who wants to implement something like Ambleside but doesn't exactly get how to go about it, the CM Help website has articles and tips on how they implement each thing in their home. May not work for everyone but at least it will give someone an idea of how to go about it. I know for me personally it has done me a world of good when it comes to American History, Shakespeare and Dictation.
