If you lived in Japan and your 12 year old daughter wanted to climb Mt. Fuji with 29 other girl scouts, would you let her? I cannot go due to cost and I have two other children who cannot go due to age. I am on the fence on this. THis is a once in a lifetime event. She is already going to spend the weekend with Japanese scouts in May and spend a week in the mountians with American scouts in June. Am I over protectived? Or go with the wind and allow this once in life time event for her. well as a child? They leave and climb on day one and get up really early and do a Sunrise Ceremony and then come home. To see the sun rise on Mt. Fuji would be AWSOME.

I think I'd go for it -- depending on the child and her temperament, personality, etc. Surely this has been done before, and since it's Scouts you'd think someone on the trip has some experience doing this and looking out for kids her age... This is something you don't get a "second chance" to do!

I guess it comes down to how much you trust them to watch over your daughter. I think it would be a great experience.

This is what is says this week is about. I would still have to get the clothes and needed supplies and my friend can go to the local sporting goods store for that.

    Mt. Fuji Leadership Climb

What to expect*: Girls will be spending the day and night at MCB Fuji being briefed on climbing Mt. Fuji, practicing safety and emergency outdoor skills, and doing team-building activities. On the 16th, girls will climb a portion of Mt. Fuji and then sleep in one of the mountain huts on the mountain! Girls will wake up before dawn and finish the climb to the summit where they will have a sunrise ceremony and Girl Scout’s Own to celebrate this once in a life-time experience. Girls will then descend down the mountain and return to MCB Fuji to reflect on the experience and compile photos and videos to create a girl-led media piece on the climb.

Her eyes got big when I pulled this up to send to her dad to get his opinion.

I have to agree with Patty it depends on how much you trust them with your daughter. Is there any adults going you know?

I couldn't do it. I would have to be with her for that one.

Her friend is going w/o mom. If this mom (a homeschooler) is okay with this than I am too. Plus one my parents (I am Cadette Leader) wants to go with her dauther. They leave when we do too. I am so excited and broke too. This trip was $250 with limited spaces so I signed up. I also signed her up to go camping in Nagao and that was $250. We are on Ramon for the rest of April but she is going to have a wonderful time :)
    Off Topic-
My friend just emailed me to help her and me with our Japanese for when she and hopefully me go spend the weekend with Japanese Scouts in May. We just hosted four girls (with another leader) over the weekend and it was fun. I am really enjoying Cadette Level of Scouting with all the cool stuff they can do now.

If someone was going that I trusted very well then I would let her go, but It's a stretch. I think that I would have to be there if there was no one I trusted. I would LOVE to do it though!!

I'd let her go if the adults going with are trustworthy and responsible.
