    Hi All,

I'm new here and my son is 4 1/2 years old. We've been doing preschool homeschool and he is doing very well for the most part. We live in a very rural area and I have been unsuccessful in finding any other homeschooling families anywhere near us. So I guess I'm just looking to find a way to not feel so isolated and alone in this endeavor. Most people around here cannot imagine why I wouldn't want to put my child in public or private school. My parents and my sister are not very supportive. They believe I am isolating my child and doing him a disservice because I don't have a teaching degree. Fortunately, hubby and I are very much in agreement on this decision. However, I do worry about my abilities to teach our child the things he needs to learn.

Thanks for listening to my venting!

Welcome! This is a great place to find advice, support, and even just an ear to vent to. I am glad to hear that at least you have your hubby fully supporting you.

Well, I DO have a teaching degree, and I'm no better off than anyone on here who doesn't!!! Ninety percent of the stuff I needed to get my degree dealt with "crowd control"...how to handle large groups of children. Guess what! YOU probably WON'T be dealing with thirty kids at a time! You are quite capable of dealing with your little guy. I mean, who taught him how to walk and talk? Who plays games and reads to him all the time? Who taught him to eat with a fork and spoon? And you can teach him to read and write just as well! WIth homeschooling, teaching is probably 30% fun games, 50% reading, 15% writing, and 5% memorization.

Welcome!! I know its hard not to let what others say get to you, but most people are scared of what they dont understand. Once your family and friends start to see the benefits from homeschooling, the comments will hopefully turn more supportive for you. :)
