I think it varies from school state to state.

Ds will be in 7th grade next year. We are doing Texas History in 7th grade and will do American History in 8th grade.

We quit using it after a few weeks.

You might want to consider Biblioplan. http://www.biblioplan.net/

    "a-g" subject?

Around here, the kids get American history in fifth grade, junior high, and in high school. They also touch on some topics in earlier-than-fifth elementary, but not like a huge course or anything.

"a-g" subject requirements are the subjects or classes required for freshman enrollment at UC or CAL State universities. If the student does not cover the classes in high school, they will have to cover them in Jr. College, assuming they want to attend these universities. Other CA universities follow the same "a-g" list but do not necessarily require the courses as much as encourage them.

    A-History/Social Science-2 years required
B- 4 years of English (preparatory)
C-3 years of Math, four recommended
D-2 years Laboratory Science, 3 recommended
E-2 years of language other than English
F-1 year Visual & Performing Arts
    G-1 year Elective

Each area offers different classes the student can take to receive credit for college. But there are some classes that can't be counted twice. An example would be German. It can't be counted as an elective and language.

Patty, I wonder how many hours of performing arts I would need to do with ds.. he has been in two community theater productions, one was 8th grade still though. I am considering getting the private school to allow me to do Annie this year with the kids at the school in order to both give the high schoolers the credits and get the community awareness of the jr/sr high classes up. I could get about three things done by doing this but I need to know how many hours would constitute a credit in it so I could set up after school program etc.

All I know is it has to be a full year course if it is done in high school.
With that said, go to the university website for all the colleges your son is interested in attending. Look up admission requirements. It should tell you if they follow the "a-g" course list or if they only recommend it. If they do not require it, your son might be fine but if they do require it, then a full year of high school credit is required or your son can take a Jr. College course for double credit.

As CA homeschoolers we can teach what we want as long as we cover the public schools required subjects. BUT! If your son attends a specific college, then there are required courses he will have to take in order to attend a specific university.
