    Who home schools high school?
I'm a newbie and want to get to know you all.:)
I will be home schooling a 9th grade boy and a 12th grade boy "next" year.
I plan on doing some summer school so I'm not really sure when "next" year will begin. I need to do the end of year paperwork next week. So, "next" year will begin sometime after that!
    Looking forward to meeting everyone!
    :)

    Hi Pam! Welcome!

I'm homeschooling a soon-to-be 17 year old. Long story short, he and public school did not get along and he ended up with next to no credits for his freshman year. So, last year, we homeschooled and recovered his freshman year credits, thinking he may go back to public school. But, he has decided to continue homeschooling! :D We will be starting what I'm considering sophonior (sophomore / junior year ;) ) year here in the next few weeks. Working year round, I believe we will be able to wrap up all he needs in two years so that he will graduate "on time". If he had gone back to public school, he would have not finished for another 3 years. That was one of the reasons he decided to stay home.

HI I have two in college, and one going into 10th grader.. he is completing 9th right now and is doing 10 for math
My dd just completed second year of College with a nice straight A semester! Weee hoo!
Sorry that little brag just snuck out!
She home schooled to 11th grade and then went to christian school for senior year ( she gets a scholarship for that!) and has been a dream for teaching High School years!
Now my ds 1 -- 21 this month! YIKES! chose to go out for High School, And my ds2 who is now 14 doing his first year of High School has asked for me to teach him next year as well> He is finding it okay doing high school at home, but the college 'kids' get in the way occasionally.
So having two , what are you thinking of using for curriculum?
I found an awesome Biology if you need to do that subject... and for Maths we like MUS. Some here use Teaching Text Book too its cool as well but costs more.
I found my ds and dd like Mr D in MUS so it works for us but not for everyone.

Welcome! Ask any questions I am sure some of us will reply!

    Homeschooling high school

I also homeschool high school. My oldest just finished his freshman year of college with a 4.0 GPA!:) My daughter graduated with honors on May 8th. She will be starting college in the fall. That leaves me with homeschooling my youngest son who will be a rising junior.

I homeschooled them all from the beginning.

If you have any questions ask away.

My daughter is in her 2nd year of high school and we have been homeschooling for 9 months. I am not going the traditional year 12 exams route to get into uni if she wants to. She would rather take an alternate pathway to uni either doing a couple of technical college certificates or preferably a diploma which if planned with the end uni in mind can count as 1st year credits. I use mostly Australian work books but am now venturing futher afield with an Aussie online math course that looks really good and some US based unit studies. I've just bought the Brave Writer Writers Jungle and Help for High schools home study pack. I frighten myself very time I look at the 246 and 176 page parent and student pdf's that I have to read!
    Good Luck

My oldest graduates this year, though technically she hasn't been homeschooled this year. We put her into a "cyber school" her Senior year, so she could take free classes at the local community college for free. She will graduate with a full year already under her belt. It has been an excellent choice for her!

My middle one just finished her sophmore year (she will NOT be taking the college classes like her sister; she's a totally different personality!!!), and my "baby" is finishing up Grade 6.

T'mom mentioned Teaching Textbook. I believe, with all my heart, that this is the ONLY way to go for higher math. Expensive, but well worth it, especially if there's no math genius in the house. The lessons can either listen to the lectures on CD, or read the book or both. EACH PROBLEM is explained step-by-step on the answers CD, so if you have no idea why you missed number 7 of lesson 42, you can pop in the CD and it is explained. It goes through Pre-cal; we had to switch to MUS for Calculus last year. Some say TT is a bit "easier". I don't know about that; all I know is that my oldest has been taking college calc this year (in preparation for going into Electrical Engineering) and is holding her own nicely.

I'm partial to Apologia for science, though we did labs through a local co-op. It's from a Christian perspective, if that makes a difference to you one way or the other. History I used Notgrass, which also includes literature, for my oldest. But I think it's too much for the next one, so we're using Streams of Civilization for her. Again, both of these are from a Christian perspective.

My 15 year old is staying home.... though some moments I wish he would graduate (my oldest is going through graduation events right now and I keep crying - LOL) with high school - but then I'm thinking he just wouldn't make it.

We are using Sonlight Core 100 for him next year (10th grade) because he wants to do American History. Science is Apologia Biology, math is now online - ALEKS, Foreign Language - Spanish using SOS (on his computer so I don't have to worry about it), & Personal Finance using SOS.

wow you guys and gals are makign me really want my summer break ! lol! We are about to stop school for the summer in a week or so. I am taking stock because we did not complete our Spanish lessons we will continue with that and then one that is College Spanish course dh took in college. I looked it over and figure we will be done with it in less than a year so since the Secondary spanish SOS had a 12 unit of lessons set up we decided we would do most this year and finish next.

Why am I sharing this here? because in High School we need two years at least of Language other than the one you speak in our country.
    er, the main one!
Keep that in mind, find one that talks to your child if you are like me and really bad with accents.

We have enjoyed our first year of High School with ds.
We did Alpha Omega for the most part, with the MUS. SOS for science and Spanish, and Life Paks for History?geography and Language arts.
We did Aop Bible as well as daily reading bible.
PE has been two seasons of Baseball.

When I first opened my little school 12 years ago, my first students were ninth graders. One stayed about 3 years before they moved from town. The others lasted anywhere from three weeks to about 7 months, and a fourth one lasted the whole 9th grade year before moving away and taking his GED. Along the way, I've had one that lasted a semester but didn't really want to be here in the first place, and another that lasted about 2 1/2 years but she turned 18 and dropped out completely mid-11th.

Next year, we'll begin the high school journey once again! My 8th grader from this year will be staying on for high school! That's the first time that's happened, that one bridged over from 8th to 9th. At the moment, I'm planning on Lifepac 9 Bible, CLE 8 and 9 for Literature, either CLE (according to placement test) or continue with R&S 6 and go on to 7 for English, CLE according to placement test for Math (she did 4th this year, and we're working through the Fractions, Algebra, and Geometry extra practice books now to get her boosted up), R&S for Science (picking out the Physical Science chapters), and Civics and Constitution from Christian Liberty for social studies. Additionally, I want to do the R&S Developing Better Reading with her for a half-credit, to better get advanced phonics and syllables. And we may get in Lifepac High school Health for a half-credit -- Health is required for the state scholarship at graduation, along with 1 1/2 credits of PE activity sometime during high school.

Health is not required for a TOPS Scholarship and neither is PE. I'm not saying that Health and PE aren't good high school subjects, they are not required for the TOPS Scholarship.

Correct me if I am wrong, but don't you have to be registered as a home study program to be eligible for TOPS? It was my understanding that you had to switch from private school option to home study option to even stand a chance at the TOPS scholarship. I read through all of the requirements and it said home study option only for TOPS eligibility and it had that home study students had to receive higher ACT and SAT scores to be eligible for TOPS than their peers.
The reason I was asking was b/c I didn't think your private school operated under the home study program.
It was actually quite daunting reading through it all and one of my main reasons for trying a virtual school next year.

    Louisiana TOPS Scholarship

Louisiana homeschoolers have to be registered in the BESE Approved Home Study Program for 11th & 12th grade years for TOPS and the student has to score a 19 on ACT for tech award, a 22 on ACT for opportunity award, a 24 on ACT for performance award, or a 28 for honors award. The reason homeschoolers have to get a higher score is because we don't have to teach the subjects required by the public schools or have the required GPA. LOFSA does allow students to substitute SAT scores but I don't know what those scores have to be off the top of my head.

The Approved Home Study Program is really not a problem. I have used this option for my kids since 1st grade. Most people think you have to jump through a bunch of hoops, but you really don't. It's like keeping a portfolio.
All they want is a list of subjects taught, the books you used, work samples (1 or 2 pages per subject), a mommie made report card, and a statement for a family member or friend saying they observed your kids doing homework. These are all things I would do anyway.

I can't give you an answer about the kids at Lindina's school though. I don't know how they would fit into the TOPS qualifications.

My plan is, at present, to have her parents register this one girl when she hits 11th grade, even though "they'll" be directing her education with my assistance... I Approved Home Study-ed my DS until I didn't anymore. It's not that tough. I guess we'll have to wait and see how the new Bobby Jindal plan plays out, as to how this affects college entrance, TOPS, and everything else.

Hi all -- I am brand new to this forum. This is my first post actually but I have a question about high school and credits. I've heard different perspectives on this and would like to know how others handle the credits.

If I have a child whose ahead in let's say...math. Can I put down Algebra 1 as a high school credit on his transcript despite the fact he took it in 8th grade? Or there is a Government class being offered at our co-op to high schoolers and it works in the schedule for my son to be able to take it next year but he will only be in 8th grade. Can I put that class on his transcript?

Or do I have to wait until he is 9th grade in all his subjects to start tracking things?

    Thanks!
Kellie -- Homeschooling from birth my three children grades 2, 5, and 8 next year and forever missing my 2nd child whose life here on earth was cut drastically short.

    Hi Kellie,
Welcome to the forum. Lots of public and private schools grant credit for high school classes taken in the 8th grade. If you son takes Algebra I and Government next school year and does well go ahead and award him credit for it. If the schools can do it so can you!

For math, Rachael took Alg. 1 (7th), Geometry (8th), Algebra 2 (9th), Pre-Calculus (10), and Calculus (11). She transfered to a cyberschool this past year, and they gave her credit for ALL of them. They also gave her .5 credit for speech in 8th grade.

I'm going to start keeping a hs transcript because Dd13's courses are now at that level. If she were in public school, she'd be in 8th grade next year. Glad I don't have to waste her time on extra years of taking fluff. ;)
