Anyone? Literature, guides, and history, specifically. I have a catalog and know nothing. About to go to the website, but often it's easier to "get it" from people who've used it. TIA!
We use Veritas for literature, Bible, and history. I quit using their literature guides very early on. Very, very dry. But, obviously, that's an opinion on my part. Their history is chronological. You get a CD that has a couple of memorization songs on it to memorize the fact cards. You get a set of cards with classical artwork on them [or photographs if no corresponding fine art can be found]. The picture is on one side while brief factual information is provided on the other side. At the bottom of each card you'll find suggested reading to supplement. The CD also contains student sheets and project ideas to go along with the material. Don't be caught unaware--- you must supplement a great deal to the course if you want the full experience. We've honestly never done the suggested readings. Instead, I just found books on my own that corresponded with what we were doing, and we used those to fill it out. VP was good at providing me with the direction to go, and that's why I've continued using it. Edited to add: they do offer online courses and they have online supplements to their history stuff now. I did a few sample lessons of the history, and they are really quite good. It's much more expensive than just getting the CDs, though.
I know that Classical Conversations uses (or used) their timeline cards and such. I don't know much about them other than seeing those b/c several of my friends are on there. They do teach to the "Trivium" (look it up....hard to explain in a few sentences. The literature stuff I've seen has been dry, also.... But the history looks very appealing.
I'd be using it *as* a supplement, to OUR history program, but I'm also looking for reading instruction. The Lit guides were a lot of what I wondered about. I want to dig into the books we read and am going NUTS trying to find anything. It's ridiculous. :/ Anyway, thanks for the feedback! I did go to the website and it wasn't super helpful. A couple of lit guide samples (but very scrawny samples), but still nothing on whatever that first $100 gets you. I'd be buying used anyway. Not sure if it's worth continuing looking into or not. I'm getting frustrated!!!
If there is a CC group in your area, show up for a preview day (whether interested or not... just pretend) so you can get a good look at the materials and ask questions. I have a friend using CC with her ds. I like what I've seen, but it doesn't fit our lifestyle and needs, and Veritas is very expensive.
I definitely wouldn't use their literature guides if you're wanting something to deeper with your reading. Their guides were really quite awful. I noticed you're near Waco. Try going to the Mardel there in Waco. They're now carrying Veritas Press materials, and you can probably get a good first-hand look at their stuff that way.
Ah, I didn't know Mardel's had their stuff. Maybe I'll get the chance to look soon! Waco's actually about 30 miles away, and the Mardel's is roughly 45 minutes. Hubby's driving in for 4 days a week now, with his school, so trips to town "just cuz" will be... no, they won't be. For a while. LOL But it's worth knowing they are there! Thanks!
