My daughter just got out of school on Tuesday and we will be homeschooling her this fall. I decided that the math reviews will start tomorrow. She really needs to catch up on a few math facts, so she doesn't get a huge break.

I don't think she will mind because reviewing at home is going to seem so much different than being in public school. Next summer, after being schooled at home for a year, she might not be so thrilled to review in the summer without much of a break. LOL

They generally recommend 1 week for every year that they've been in public school. (I think. Or is it 1 month for every year? LOL That'd be hard to do for someone coming home for high school.... Anyway.)

We didn't. My son went 3 years to the ps, preK through 1st grade. Took maybe a full week off and he was READY to get started, ASKING to "do homeschool." Never looked back. ;)

If your kiddo is ready for it, just jump in whenever you're ready.

Another thought, if you will generally plan to follow the ps-style calendar, not starting school until the fall and having a longer summer break, then you might start "homeschool" by doing fun outings and save the book work for when you will usually start every year. No real basis for that thought; it just dawned on me. LOL

Start when he's ready! Asking to do it is a good sign, as is going through the curriculum or asking if he can do/study x, y, or z.

If there is one regret that I have from our first year home schooling, it is that we took a few weeks off and then started working and reviewing with the kids. It really made for a very long first year and by the time we broke for the next summer I was almost ready to give up and put them back in school.
I would give them a break. I would really let them unwind and have a summer. I wish that I would have just given placement tests that summer and went from there with it all. We spent our whole first year burnt out from schooling through the summer.
I would recommend at least a 6 week break before starting any type of at-home schooling at least.

Totally undstand that.. But with my kids they need the year round school concept. Kodey and his learning disabilities and Breanna with her autism. I am going to take it slow and just do a few things during the day. That way they are able to still have their summer break :D

Since this is our first year homeschooling, I planned to start big in the fall. I figured the best transition for my daughter was to set up school at home. She is so excited to get started. She would like to start now. I am keeping her busy with math reviews and fun projects.

Next year we will break around camp, VBS, vacations and activities, but not take a full on summer break.

I am homeschooling this year. Neither one of my boys did well in school this year because of their behaviors. 9 DS was pulled from school a month before school was out and started home school immediately without any break. 13 DS managed to keep his behaviors under control toward the end of the year and was able to finish out the year and earned a two week break before starting him home school curriculum.

So I think it just depends on you. There is no right or wrong, it's what works for your child.
