Can you shed any light here???? My kids love BJU. We have tried apologia and they hate it, Oakmeadow they loved it, but it was too labor intensive for me. I am considering the BJU for next year with the teaching DVDs because I work outside the home and don't always have the time to finish teaching a concept. My dilemena is the price..... can you recommend any ideas that wouldn't be SO expensive
I have no idea what these run, new or otherwise, but would purchasing them used help with the cost? I often purchase mine on another forum like this one, only it's very large and has an active sale/swap board. (Of course I purchase here if someone has something I need or want as well.) Another place to look is homeschoolclassifieds - I've seen several of the ladies here recommend it and have been perusing it myself lately for some hard to find items. Sometimes buying used helps enough to matter, and sometimes, especially when you consider separate shipping on items, it's not really worth it. I'm not sure on these, but it's worth a look probably! Sorry, I'm not familiar enough with BJU or their dvd teaching program to know what else to recommend. Maybe others here will have some recommendations though.
Here in Tn, if you lease the dvds during a convention or curriculum fair, with a minimum of 6, you can get them for half price!!! That's $200 per class with all books included. Still pricey, but much more reasonable.
If you are doing multiple grades, it does add up! I love BJU myself but have never used the dvd's. You could buy as many of the non-consumable books as possible used. Homeschoolclassifieds.com has alot of BJU books. BJU uses alot of workbooks and activity books, so those you almost have to buy those new. Don't really know of a way to make it alot less expensive!
When I called BJU one time a rep told me the same thing. I called back to ask questions about it and they acted like i was insane..... I just sent a email to the person holding the convention and she hasn't responded yet. If that is the case, that would be awesome. I not sure how to confirm the information. Any suggestions?
This is the lady that I have spoken to during 2 fairs now...She seems to be some sort of independent representative. Maybe that's why BJU balked...you have to go through these dealers? She was super nice. I don't know if she could work out of her area, but she could probably put you in touch with someone else if she can't......good luck! Here is the link to the BJU shows by Precept Marketing. They are the ones who were at the convention. Try emailing the rep closest to you and see if they know something about the deal. You probably need to go through them to get it. http://www.homeworksbyprecept.com/consultant-event-locator.html
You could try Lifepacs, they are mostly self guided and workbook style. Then you can add to as you feel you have time.
Have you thought about not getting the DVDs? I've used BJU for different subjects throughout the years and we could never (could still not) afford the DVDs! Assign the section review questions, orally discuss the chapter reviews or vise versa. I give the tests open book as a "review". I've not used BJU for upper level science or math, but middle school science can easily be done that way. You can assign library books and/or documentaries to add if needed. I work outside-the-home as well.. only part time for me... but still, I understand "not being able to teach everything"! Pam
I went in and put my information it brought me to the same events that I saw listed on BJU. But the catch is they are different contact people. Do you really think it would make a difference?? I have already emailed the first contact person twice.
When I contacted the my first contact person they said if you are purchasing 2 or 3 subjects then they will give you the 50% off but not if you are purchasing the entire curriculum. Urgh when I contacted BJU directly they told me the direct opposite. My kids love their program but wow what a pain in the butt.
I just sent everyone an email. Telling them I needed the 7th grade complete set plus an extra set of consumables since I have two children doing the program. Let see if anything comes of it. I have used BJU for the last two years and I have done it without the DVD's and I tend to skimp on things when I am busy. My husband said that if I want to keep the kids home then I can't do that anymore. That is why were are getting the DVD's. The good thing is I am able to teach my children on the same grade level since they are only 1 year apart.
Hmmm...I'm thinking that mixing and matching is where the discount would be of a benefit. I think the complete grade (6 subjects for $1099) is actually cheaper than the half price deal (6 for $1200) so that is probably why they told you that you can't use it to order that way. They are not going to let you get a full grade for $550 if you know what I mean.
