I had to look up 50 Shades of Grey, because I had no idea what it was. DH looked over my shoulder as I was reading the "plot" (I use this term loosely), and he gasps and says, "What are you doing?" I said, "I didn't know what this book was about, and everybody was talking about it, so I thought I would see wqhat the big fuss was about." He blinks a few times and says, "It's a smut book.". "Oh well," I say "I have tons of those." (I love romance novels), but....Oh. My. God. I have nothing even CLOSE to what THIS book is talking about! Holy crap! I wouold never read something like THAT!

Meg -- I did the same thing. I had to look it up when so many women were talking about it. I had avoided looking it up because the same women who were gaga over Twilight and Hunger Games (neither of which interest me in the least) were now gaga over 50 Shades. So I knew it wouldn't interest me. Finally, when I realized it wasn't going away, I looked up the "plot". I was slightly horrified to say the least. I just can't help but feel complete embarrassment for these women that are posting their adoration for these novels all over their Facebook wall.

One of my male cousins made an excellent point on Facebook. He said most women he knew would have their husbands sleeping on the couch for reading/looking/watching similar filth, much less merely mentioning it; yet here these same women are posting their obsession with Twilight teen boys and soft porn (he was referring to 50 Shades) unashamedly on their Facebook walls. I couldn't agree more with him.

I thought it was interesting that a non-Christian I know of posted this today. She is basically saying the same thing, without tossing out all porn.

I did not know what 50 shades of Grey was either. I have no interest in the book or going to see the movie Magic Mike.

    Interesting...

This "non-Christian" is actually a born again, blood bought child of the king who expressed her opinions due to the rest flurry of activity she has seen in her personal life and the way this book is being treated. She wanted to address people who are hypocrites, not necessarily saying that porn is a good. It's more like looking into your self before pointing out the flaws in others.

(when you link a website, the website owner sees trackbacks and where they came from)

    Y'all have a good one...

Wow. I didn't mean any offense. I'm sorry. You're right, I assumed. I assumed that since you approached it from a secular point of view, that was your worldview. I agreed with you in the comments on your blog, btw. And I didn't mean that you implied porn was good; only that you didn't "toss it out" (which is what I said).

It's all good and fine :) No hard feelings. I'm forced to take on a more secular view because that is the world we live in. But, with that being said, I do Christian book reviews whenever possible and talk about my faith very often on my Facebook page. I apologize if I came off a bit stand offish when you said non-Christian.. that is my issue, not yours. If that is how I come across to people, maybe I should change it!

50 Shades of Grey. Someone in my community is reading this book and when asked about it was told I wouldn't like it so I had to go and find out what it's about. I think I downloaded a sample. I don't remember.
I am not all out there and show it off but I don't have a problem with some stuff. DH and I both saw IRL strippers/dancers back in the day when we were both in Florida. We had our fun but we didn't go crazy like some people do. This was also like 15 years ago so maybe back then so maybe things are a bit more wild now?

Back in my 20's I went to see a male strip show (blushed the entire time), I went to see Boogie Nights but now I cannot imagine doing those things. I do not know if it is because I have matured or just because I have gotten closer to God but they just do not seem right anymore. I have many freinds who have read or are reading 50 shades or are going to see Magic Mike but I really have no desire to do that and it does make me uncomfortable at this point.

While I think the human body is a beautiful thing, the only male I want to look at is my husband. He rocked my world when he was 18 and young and had a full head of dark beautiful hair. He made my heart go pitter pat when he was police chief and wearing his dress uniform at 38 even though his hair was graying and thinning. At 59 he wears overalls, works in his garden, tends his bee hives, rides his motorcycle, doesn't have a lot of hair left and loves me and our family. He has never looked better to me.

Sloan, that was a beautiful comment!

I wanted to be fair before I made a judgement on Magic Mike, so watched the trailer, and here is the synopsis:

A male stripper teaches a younger performer how to party, pick up women, and make easy money.

According to the trailer there is a little more to it than that, he also wants a girldfriend. The plot thickens. Said the hopeful director to his producer. Its still all about booze and bodies.

DH and I are considerede prudes by his family, because we dont care for movies where the central theme is about "partying".

I consider it being tasteful and decent. To each his own, I suppose. Things seem to be just getting worse and worse....

I agree with you on this too.If you know God has commanded you not to do this things, then why would you read a book/watch a movie about someone else doing them?

    Philippians 4:8
    King James Version (KJV)

8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

I said the same thing about Magic Mike as I've seen posted here. I have no interest in seeing. There was so many "girls night out" and hoop-la posted over this movie by people I know it is embarrassing.

As for 50 Shades of Grey, I read the description and was sort of shocked it was a best seller. (And I read romance novels and some do walk on the side of erotica. My moral compass was expanded here recently and I'm trying to find good romances without the smut but that's another story.) A good friend of mine read it and this is what she posted on facebook:
This is from someone I know and trust to judge literature. I just she would have posted something about "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" before I read that.....

I have seen the previews for it on tv, but I have not interest in seeing it. I wouldn't want my husband watching a movie about girl strippers. Our society has become so strange and deluded. I would say that if someone calls you a prude for sticking to your beliefs then take it as a compliment. On the flip side, I wouldn't say anything to anyone that would offend them. If your asked to go let your yes be yes and your no be no. ;)

Ok, I DID watch "Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" because I am a Daniel Craig fan. I didn't much like the sex in it (I was pretty embarassed by it and left the couch a couple of times to go "refill my popcorn and get a drink or go to the bathroom", but I liked the mystery behind it all and the underlying story. I feel sorta bad for liking it, but that's how it is.

You would not believe what I saw at Target. There was a display of the Magic Mike DVD by the checkout lane and this little girl, maybe 9 years old, picked one up and said
"Ooooo, mom! "Magic Mike"!!! Can we get it???" and mom bought it!

Unbelievable. I just stood there with an "I-can't-believe-you-just-bought-that" look on my face.

would have been my reaction. I would have to hope and pray she didn't turn around and see the look on my face bc she might have been offended! lol I know some people who have 2 girls and the oldest one is 10 and she...I'm sure...is going to be pregnant by the time she's at least 13. If there are any men within her radius she hops on them, throws her legs around them, wont let go, and starts like...grinding on them...and saying stuff like, "I'm sp happy to see you and I've been thinking about you!!!" and just...catching some major unwanted attentin from some....untrustworthy....older folks. Mom encourages it too, and doesn't try to stop it. It just...ick...freaks me out!!
