So I have been looking into IEW's student writing intensives for my son this year. I just want this, not the combo pack. It is being sold at IEW for $109. I have been looking for used copies, but everyone is charging $150 and up. Am I looking at the wrong thing? Or were older editions different somehow? I don't get it.

Hmmm....not sure if they changed something, but we used SWI-B that we borrowed from someone. It was only the student DVDs and I had to order the PDF of the file that went with it. Could the sets that are 150 also include the teacher training course? Or are you looking only at the Teacher set for the price??? The teacher set is usually pricy, but it teaches you the methods so you can use any of the books ore programs.

Not sure this helps at all.

I don't know, but I find choosing their programs difficult. I bought the teacher set and a student set about a year and a half ago, but I got the advice from a salesperson at a convention. I think if had to order it from a catalog- I would go wrong somewhere.

One the other hand, sometimes people will knowingly (or unknowingly) try to sell something for more than it is worth.

I just went browsing on the website...

The combo packs that include the Teacher (TEaching Structure & Style) and Student Writing Intensive is $249.

The $109 is the STUDENT DVD's only. Also, if you want the books/notebooks those are add ons. You can download the ebook for as low as $10 which is what I did that year. Or you can order the notebook with the tabs, etc...

I would HOPE that people selling IEW Student Writing Intensive charging $150 would either be: 1) Including blank notebooks with all the materials or 2) including the Teacher's DVDs as well.

Don't get me wrong...they are all worth it!

I've been through the course for the teacher. My oldest did the SWI-B from a friend (both were borrowed). So last year she did the THEME based writing book for Ancient History to go with the history we did. This year she's doing the THEME based lessons for Medieval History. But she's been through an SWI so she was able to do that pretty much on her own since she's learned the basics.

HOPING my upcoming 6th grade BOY will be ready for SWI-B this year!

    We'll see!!!!

Thanks for the help! I thought the $109 price included the student pages/binder as well. That makes more sense. I am familiar with the teacher course as we used it as curriculum in a private school where I taught. It looks like the student course covers the same information but for the student. Could you go straight to the theme based courses without doing SWI?? Just wondering..

I think if YOU as the teacher have a good understanding of the IEW process, you could easily do the the themed books without having to do SWI first. My oldest maybe made it 2/3rds of the way through the SWI we did - and she jumped right into the themed the following year.

My oldest did her IEW very independently, and I had the teacher guides to it to help me if she ever had questions, but she never did.

I love IEW. And how it's turned my daughter into a thinker as well as a writer. It's helped so much with how she writes reports and stuff because she can take info she learns and she knows how to reword, dress it up, make it sound "pretty" without plagiarizing her sources.

Also, it's increased her desire to write creatively on her own! THAT I love, too!

    :) Good luck!
