We are using abeka - first year homeschooling although we have been using abeka for several years at the private Christian school my son attended.
    They tore pages there.
I am contemplating on just keeping them in the books so I don't have to deal with the massive paperwork pile :)

    What do you guys do?

We usually tear them out because my sons prefer writing on a flat surface and that can be difficult in a workbook, especially a thick one like their math. If it is a thinner workbook and the pages aren't perforated, we might not.

Thank you - I have a quick follow up question. Do you guys keep all the pages? I tend to want to keep it all when it comes to my kids so just wondering what others do. I am not a packrat and I have no problems getting rid of anything except when it relates to children things :(

You could always put the papers in a binder once they're removed from the book.

I keep a binder full of work for each child for each year. That way, it's all in one place instead of a couple workbooks here, spiral notebook there, loose papers all over. We don't use a ton of workbooks so a lot of their papers are loose anyway.

Yes, most of what they do I keep. I probably shouldn't but it's a lot of fun to look back and see how far they've come from year to year.

For one kid I tear out pages, he gets overwhelmed. For another she likes seeing the pages towards the back of the book getting thinner, so I keep them in for her.

I save all most work until the end of the year, when I compile portfolios for our evaluation. I then pick 3 things from the beginning, 3 things from the middle, and 3 things from the end of the year for each subject. These go into a sheet protector for each subject and into a binder with all of our logs and what not that we need to have. I end up with about a 1 inch binder for each student to keep as a keepsake.

Now that I have more kids doing school, I will most likely pick my keeps every 12 weeks so I can ditch the rest and not keep a huge amount of work floating around till the end of the year.

I tear out workbook pages just because it is easier to write on them. Every week I 3 hole punch them and put them in a binder. Each quarter after I write up my quarterly report I take them out and just file them. I keep them in my filing cabinet for about a year and then I clean it out and just keep a few examples of dd's work.

My kids like to write on flat surface too, so I tear them out. I hole punch everything and put it in a binder. I only keep it for one year, I don't have to turn in a portfolio or report anything in Texas, but I like to look back to see the progress. After June, it all goes in the trash.

Usually if it's a workbook, not a textbook, I will tear them out. I put them in a two pocket folder for working on. My kids tend to get overwhelmed by seeing the WHOLE workbook at one time vs. 2 or 3 weeks of work at one time. It works well for us. Work to do on the right, work that's done on the left. Once a unit I clean out all their folders and restock for the next units.

After I move the "done" work out it goes in a 6" binder that gets shown to our evaluator, and then submitted to the district for review/approval.

My oldest in the last year or so has gotten to liking the workbook together and not split out, so I promised her this year I'd just leave it alone....we'll see how it goes... LOL :)

In the past, I've torn EVERYTHING out, and then put it in binders, but it's such a hassle. Now, as someone else stated, I only tear pages out when it's a thick book and hard to write in. Otherwise, I don't.

This year we started tearing out pages because my kids tend to get overwhelmed when they see the whole workbook. Plus it's easier for them to put the 1 sheet on a clipboard and carry it around.

    We tear out.

I don't save much, just random throughout the year in case I need them for any reason.

I guess that is what I do. I forgot about a couple of thinner books and even Latin, that is more of a textbook with a worksheet in it. Even though it is kind of thick dd suffers through because I do not tear them out of there. For our Bible though we are using God's Great Covenant and that is a thick book. I had dh take of the spine of the book ( I think he and his dad used a table saw or some other machine) and I 3 hole punched it and put it in a binder for dd.

I prefer to keep them in the books, the girls prefer to have them torn out. It just seems like they get misplaced when they are loose.

It's not a battle I'm choosing to fight right now though. Whatever they prefer is what we'll do.
