Hello, I am new and just introduced myself on the introduction board. My 8 year old will be starting 3rd grade in a few weeks. She has always homeschooled and is really looking forward to box day. This is what we are planning to use:

    Learning Language Arts Through Literature
    The Logic of English
    Writing with Ease
Teaching Textbooks 3 (we also will slowly start to work our way through the Learn Math Fast System)
History Odyssey Middle Ages / History Portfolio Jr Medieval
    R.E.A.L. Science Odyssey Life
    Home Art Studio

In addition to this are lots of miscellaneous things, like logic workbooks, some Spanish, etc. Oh, and I also signed her up for Aha!Math and Aha!Science.

I hope I'm not missing anything. I think I covered all the bases plus some extras, but if you think of anything glaringly left out, let me know.

If you have a 3rd grader, what are you planning on using? It's fun to compare and get new ideas.

I don't use curriculum for every subject, but those are the main ones. I also use curriculum for foreign language and ds will be taking a computer class online.

    Hi Embassy,
We'll be using Perplexors too (I can't remember now which kind we ordered). They look like a lot of fun. I've used Cozy Grammar with my ds. I call her "Granny Grammar". :D 101 Doodle Definitions sounds interesting. I'll have to check that out.

    Hi Amie,
We have some Draw and Write Through History too. But, then I decided to use a different cursive so I'm not sure if I'll use them much (unless we just do any of the writing in the different cursive....or skip the writing and just do the drawing, I don't know). Another TT3 user, yay!

    Hi Crystal,
I like your username. :D I was soooooooo close to choosing MUS this year. I've used it before, years ago. But dd really, really wanted to do TT like her older brother. I almost thought of using both TT and MUS, but then realized I would be setting myself up to even more work. One main math program for us is enough (although, I am getting a few Developmental Math workbooks to throw in with TT......see, I couldn't help myself  ). I've used A Reason for Handwriting with my oldest and always liked that style. But, since LOE has a cursive book we'll try that.

It's fun to see all the variety that people choose.

    Apologia Astronomy
    Spectrum Science workbook

We won't be doing every page. It's made to go hand-in-hand with STOW and we're using MOH, so it doesn't line up exactly. That's OK with me. We're mostly using the art lessons (1-2 a week, depending on if there is a lesson for what we're studying in MOH). The writing portions, we'll be doing those just as more practice. Since we're using A Reason For Handwriting, the writing portions won't be as critical.

It's our first year coming from private school where we used abeka so we are going with abeka for everything except for science in which we are using Apologia. I speak Spanish so once we get going I will teach a full day in Spanish for our Spanish and then doing Music and Art hands on by going to the Museums and the Symphony.

I'm looking forward to getting the Perplexors books too. I tried to give you a link to the different ones at Rainbow Resource, but I guess I'm not allowed to post links yet. If you go to Rainbow Resource and just type in "perplexors" you'll see some different kinds. Classics for Kids sounds interesting. I'll have to check that out. I'm glad you mentioned Jump In. I have that somewhere. I got it for my son but he never ended up using it. Gosh, I can't remember now what ages/grades that is for. I wonder if my dd could use it? I'll be on the hunt for that book later today.

    Hi Josie,
Sounds like a fun-filled year for you and your boys. I've heard of Ambleside but never looked into it.

I have an old Paddle to the Sea VHS (I remember watching that movie when I was in school). I watched once with dd and then that was enough for her. It was neat, but not something she'd probably watch again. If you are interested in it, let me know. Otherwise, maybe you can find it at your library through interlibrary loan and watch it after you've read the book.

I'll have to check out the website for sign language. Dd has done signing since she was 9 months old using Signing Time. She wants to work a little more on it this year. I found The Joy of Signing at a garage sale last week for $1.00. It's a big hardcover book and I was pretty thrilled.

Yes, but it's useful no matter which history you use. Some things don't line up exactly, though. For instance, the first book has 3 or 4 drawings for ancient China (plus the write-up). MOH only talks about ancient China (so far) twice, and not in consecutive order. So we skip around and pick and choose. MOH does talk about China's silk production and Draw has a picture of a silk worm moth. So we paired those two lessons on the same day.

My boys are REALLY excited about the drawing lessons. I think they'll be a touch hard for my 3rd grader (or so says my professionally trained artist of a husband), but we agreed to let him try.

Sounds neat. I like the idea of teaching one day in Spanish. I wish I were fluent in a foreign language to be able to do that.

Thanks for sharing your plan. I have the Right Start game cards and book and we've played a few of the games that they have shown on youtube. It's a great way to practice math.
