Hi everyone! Glad to come across this site and hope to learn a lot and make some new friends in the process. :D I am starting homeschooling for the first time with my two daughters, ages 14 and 7. We're all looking forward to it but I'm starting to get a little overwhelmed! Anyway, I have two questions for you and would appreciate any advice. I've decided to try out the Lifepac books this year (I have a friend that uses them as well) and wanted to know where I could find used books. The other question was whether or not I should get a placement test for my 7 year old who will be going into 2nd grade this year. She was previously in a Montessori class.

Again, thanks so much and look forward to becoming a frequent poster here and getting to know all you in the homeschoolin' trenches!

Welcome! You will really enjoy it here. There are so many wonderful ladies (and gents) with all kinds of wisdom and advice.

As for lifepacs, I have a handful of 3rd and 4th grade language arts and history sets I don't need and would be willing to sell to you. I know they are not the grades you are looking for but if you are interested let me know.

If you are looking for a used bookstore there is an excellent one I used to shop at when I lived in WA and I still order from them. They will ship for cheap which is great and their prices are really reasonable too. They also have great customer service. They are called homeschool potpourri and they are in Kirkland WA. I am typing this on my phone right now and I can't remember their exact website but I will look it up later and post it.

    Again welcome!

    Hi and Welcome, Jaye!
Yes, I would use the placement test for both your kids.
When I started homeschooling my DS (a LONG time ago) I used Lifepacs. Nowadays I prefer Christian Light (www.clp.org) for reading, LA, and math (and some Bible), but I still use Bible, Science, and History&Geography Lifepacs sometimes. There's always someone on the yahoo group christianlightfamilies who has unused units and other materials for sale.

Welcome to the spot. I've never used lifepacs so no advice there but as far as shoping for used homeschooling books I have a list of sites I scope out when I need things listed on the right hand side of this page http://gapeachhomeschool.yolasite.com/frugal-resources.php Hope that helps!

Thank you all so much for the quick advice!

Indina, might try the christianlight site you gave me as it seems I have the flexibility to mix things up more than I ever thought.

Minthia, would love to have the lifepacs for 3rd and 4th grade as my youngest child is entering 2nd this year but feel I need to test her first before I make a commitment. Oh, did look up homeschool potpourri but they didn't have what I was looking for.

JosieB, thanks for all the useful sites you've put together! Should definitely make my search easier!

mommyvo, hey the welcome is appreciated. Beginning to feel like a duck out of water but I do have a very good friend who's been homeschooling for the last few years so I'm sure she'll help me muddle through it. YIKES!

    - Math: TM and books #3 (some minor writing so this one would be free), #4-#5. $6 for the set
    - History/Geography: No TM but I have books #1-#10. $10 for the set.

    Third Grade Lifepacs:
    - Language Arts: No TM but books #6-#10. $5 for the set.

You pay shipping but I will ship the cheapest way possible unless you want it faster.
