I started homeschooling in January of this year. Of course my first step was to spend a lot of money on one of the big name curriculum. I have since figured out that that wasn't the best decision right of the bat.

For the first time since I made my decision to home school I feel like I have found a place to find answers to all my questions. I have 2 weeks to read this whole forum! lol

I have a 10yr old and an almost 7 yr old. We are going to go ahead and finish out the curriculum I bought, 4th grade and 1st grade. Then I am going to try to piece some things together to cater to what they like. I don't want everyday to be a fight. It's taken 9 months out of public school, but I finally feel like I've caught the vision.

Looking forward to getting to know you all and have an outlet where people "get" it. Unfortunately I don't have any homeschooling mommy friends.

    Welcome to the Spot!
MOST people - especially those of us who didn't have lots of IRL homeschool friends to help us get started -- feel more comfortable buying a curriculum-in-a-box when they're first getting started, so don't feel like it was a huge mistake. The first year is usually where people find out what they like and what they don't like about the first curriculum they bought, and branch out from there. So far, you're perfectly typical! LOL

    Welcome to the Spot!

You didn't make a mistake, you learned a boxed curriculum wasn't for you and yours. Learning is never a mistake :)

This is the place to ask questions and get help, that's for sure, I don't know what I would have done without the spot when I started!

Welcome! I agree with JosieB; you didn't make a mistake, you just learned more about what doesn't work for your family. This seems to be a great place to ask questions and learn.

I did the complete opposite. When I first started I didn't get any portion of a curriculum and to be honest, the lack of structure really held us back those first couple of years. If nothing else, I bet you were a lot more organized and structured than if you hadn't purchased a curriculum. It's funny how real education takes place over a life time. :D

Thank you for all the responses. I have definitely learned from it. I just wish it hadn't been such a costly lesson!

Due to starting mid year I have couple of months before I have to make a decision about curriculum again. I'm looking forward to learning from you all. I feel like I've found a hidden secret!

Welcome! I'm glad you have "caught the vision." That will give you some direction. I think that everyone has to experiment a little to figure out what works with their kids. Have a wonderful year.
