I'm looking into afterschooling my dd since right now homeschooling isn't an option. I think this would be a happy medium between me and SO. He's fine with this idea just not exclusive homeschool. I think it would be a great way for me to stay involved in her learning and be able to help in the areas of struggle and push deeper in the areas that are easy for her. I'm not sure I want it all or even most of it to be worksheets since she has 8hrs of school she does but I am trying to figure it all out without spending any or much on it.

I know lots of people do afterschool, but I couldn't imagine doing it. Even in K my oldest would bring home an hour or more of homework every single night :(

I wouldn't do more than have like family game night or something.. there is a lot to be learned even from age old games like Yahtzee or Scrabble

Wow. I can't imagine an hour of homework at that age, or even now. She usually has about 10 min of homework if she doesn't do it at school. She uses every minute at school and on the bus to get things done and then I just check it. She has some areas in reading comprehension and language arts she's struggling and so I'm just looking to reinforce a little and then we do some math reviews like addition/subtraction facts so she gets those down solidly. I found I have a computer game for K-5 I got when I was considering homeschool and I think that may be what we use because she loves her computer time for working on enrichment/review. We use abcya.com a lot and then this I think will help. I have some workbooks but like I said I'm trying to stay away from that. We love game nights and while we haven't ever played yahtzee we love monopoly and scrabble jr I bet she would also like scrabble. Thanks for those suggestins. We also do lots of card games like 7 ate(8) nine, go fish wiht a ton of variations, and skipbo jr. I never really thought a lot about all the learning done in those type things too honestly.

Yep, same here. Between the long bus ride, homework, dinner, bath & bedtime, my son had 2 hours of free time a day, there's no way I would have ever have dreamed of making him do more.

But if you and your daughter are up for it then there are many free resources available.

My friends who have middle-school children are ALREADY (4 days into the school year) complaining that their children are up to at leas midnight every night doing homework. There's no time for "afterschooling" in all that.

Last year in PS 7th grade Garrett was strapped with a minimum of 2 hours of work, many nights his algebra alone would take him 3.

When my ds was in 1st grade ps, he had at least an hour of homework each night. I can't imagine doing afterschooling, but I'm sure it's possible. I would definitley make it "fun" learning!

Here is my thoughts. Many of us here (I think it is probably the majority) are fairly "relaxed" as in we don't use 3 maths and 2 grammars, and a writing the prepares a 2nd grader to write a college thesis.

BUT there is a board that is loaded with that kind of homeschooler. On that board they have a section just for afterschoolers and it seems like it is active. Try looking HERE, you can see what they are doing, and see how they fit extras in on top of the demands of a public school schedule. :)

I think that would be difficult, but if she's willing, I think you can do it!

I think it would be hard too.....more so for Lydia. She'll be in school aaaallll day and then have to do more school when she is home, plus homework? Last year I volunteered at an afterschool reading program. I felt bad for the kids, because they had been in school since eight a.m., now it was 3:30 and they still had to do this reading program. Sometimes you could see them literally zone out and couldn't even do what they were told to do (which involved reading quickly while being timed). Plus then they had homework when they got home. I understand why you want to consider doing this....I'm sorry that homeschooling might not work out. If you do decide to afterschool, I'd try to stick with games, cooking, maybe a little sewing....but pick one of those things each night.

I've never afterschooled, but it might be a great way to support her and possibly convince your husband that homeschooling can work.

I agree that worksheets might not be best after a full day of school. What subjects and levels are you looking to support her in? We might be able to give you some suggestions.

I do know some who afterschool use things like audio in the car, a little bit of time in the morning, some time after school, or time on weekends. You would have to see what fits your family the best.
