We started on July 31st. We loved finishing the first week of May last year! I like being ahead of the public school year because it makes me feel like we're on top of things.
We are starting on August 22, when our homeschool charter begins. We are enrolled in the ps homeschool academy.
I plan on starting on Monday. We got most of our curriculum yesterday, and I wrote out my lesson plans for that last night. I just need to order my math and pick out a book for DS to read, and we'll be all set. We can start with what we have in the meantime, though. Next year I plan to go mostly year round, with a 4 week on, one week off, schedule with 3 weeks off at the end of June and beginning of July.
I want to start now. But...we don't even have anything we ordered yet. I'll probably shoot for at least Sept 5th (we better have our stuff by then!). Our situation is a bit different. My ds takes a class each semester at the high school (so he starts Sept 5th). Both of my kids are enrolled in our districts "homebased educational program". So even though they do school at home, we pick our curriculum...and they technically are called public school students. The only real difference is that the school pays for our stuff. We are waiting every day to get the e-mail that our many boxes are at the school to pick up.
I guess we started today. We moved aug 1 and I just got to unpacking the school room. My 5 yo found his shelf of books and decided he wanted to do school today. I was pretty thrilled yesterday to find that I had science 1, math 1, social studies 1, and maybe some LA1 that I'll use but we'll see. Almost everything I have was given to me and so I have no idea what I've got. Some of the curriculum is overwhelming to me. So I don't know if I'll use it all. We've been doing alright so far and he's only 5. So we'll see how it goes. I think he read half his BJ science 1 book today. And I we did 7 science experiments today...not exaggerating I love homeschooling!
We started today! 6 year old, year1/first grade: Life of Fred Apples, Language Lessons for The Very Young, The Story of the English 1st chapter (that book is now called Our Island Story but I have the hardbound 188? edition that use to be a Brooklyn NY school book), we picked out an easy animal to study (Chipmunks and Squirrels) for mammal study this term, and read a poem. Later will be her Bible study before bed. When our Latin book gets here I believe we will do 1 word a day, but I'm not 100% on that. Also, we will do composer and artist study every week. I did one year of homeschool myself when I was 15 and it was the best year of schooling I ever had and was life changing. On average I probably spent an hour and a half to two hours a day, for the most part on my own. I mention that because I'm curious about people posting the many hours a day people are doing lessons with their young children. On days when I was doing 2 hours and more, was when I was engrossed in a project like making my own snow shoes, or doing several days worth of math so I could have a long weekend. No doubt there will be tweaks. We recently did a week of vacation bible school and today she was bummed that we didn't do crafts like at vbs. Aach! (and here I thought that all that busy work at VBS was a pointless waste of time...well I still do but evidently she loved it)
I was planning to start today, but now I'm not so sure. I woke up feeling awful. I think it might be mastitis
We started last Monday. But it was a very light week. This week we are FULL force. But I'm happy to report that all but one of my kids are finished for the day! YAY!!!
Start?! There is a "start?" Where was the end? Oh, now I remember. There is no "start." Ours never ends! It kind of goes in waves of heavy to light, but all year around...flowing like a river. I finally have accepted it for what it is and just paddle my way through the calm, try to steer through the rapids, and hold on tight for the waterfalls. My husband's work schedule, if one would call it that, and our lifestyle with all its obligations change our course too unexpectedly too often to have start and end times.
We are starting the 4th week in September, because.... We are spending the second week at Disneyland!! Then a week to recover LOL.
I feel this will be us once we get into the groove of things. Too many things are thrown at us and keeps changing our paths.
We are starting the Wednesday after Labor Day. We try to follow along with our local school district as my two oldest are in the Public High School.
