My daughter is currently a sophomore in high school, and I am finding it to be a complete joke. In her Spanish class last year the students were so unruly that the teacher finally just gave up. She would make idle threats to send the students to the Principal's office, but never backed up her threats. The rest of the year was spent with the kids doing whatever they wanted, and the teacher just sitting there, staring into space. This year is not much different, but in addition to the poor learning environment, she is now ridiculed and comes home crying. I am looking at online high schools, but they are SO expensive! Do any of you use an affordable online high school program, where they actually teach the student? I have been checking into this, but the ones I have found are ridiculously expensive ($15,000?!!) Any advice would be greatly appreciated...

You don't say what state you are from, homeschool laws and virtual options vary by state.

Assuming you have no problem with the PS curriculum and educational approach you might try http://www.k12.com/ or http://www.connectionsacademy.com/home.aspx They might offer free education in your state.

If you are okay with Christian Curriculum you might try http://www.abekaacademy.org/ (not free but not $15,000 either!)

You might find some helpful options here http://www.hslda.org/highschool/curriculum.asp#CC They list complete curricula, correspondence schools and online schools. I haven't looked at price and since they are listed through HSLDA most are probably Christian based.

These are the 3 I have heard of:
Penn foster and American school are both accredited done online or through correspondence. I know one family who sends all their kids through American School and they say it is a dry curriculum. Another family is using Penn Foster and they said it is perfect for their daughter. She wants to be a nurse and they are getting her educated for her CNA at Penn Foster as well as her High School Diploma. They said its basic (meaning not college prep) but perfect for what they want. American has 2 tracks college track and regular track. Another family is using James Madison but we still don't know much yet. These 3 don't cost near as much as other programs they were telling me. American School is the place our local high school used for courses that were failed.

    There is Penn Foster http://www.pennfoster.edu/diploma/
    Also American School http://www.americanschoolofcorr.com/
    James Madison http://www.ashworthcollege.edu/programs/high-school/
