Looking to supplement Hakim's History of the US with either living books, basic text type book, movies, or any other ideas for the Revolutionary war and Civil War. (workbooks) I do like the Hakim books but that are in a snap shot style.
I KNOW, I KNOW!!! If you go to my web page, I have some really good Civil War books listed. One of my favorites is called "Two Miserable Presidents". It's a fun non-fiction book. As far as the Revolution, there's always Johnny Tremain, plus you can see the Disney movie of it. Another one my kids liked was Guns for General Washington, about bringing the guns from Fort Ticonderoga. It's an easy read. I'll see tomorrow if I can find some of the Revolution books we read.
Check out Homeschool in the Woods Time Travelers. Lots of great information plus hands on activities, time lines, lapbook outlines... We did part of the Revolutionary War one and they have one for the Civil War. If you want books to read check out Sonlight's Core 100. They have a bunch of books that they use along with Hakim.
We're probably going to be doing the civil war either the 2nd half of this year or starting next year. I love the civil war history, the time period, etc so I've been eyeing some resource. I've had this http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098769/ on my watchlist forever. But I haven't actually seen it. (It's free if you have Amazon Prime so check Netflix if you have it) I've had my eye on this activity book And I really want to get my hands on this book. It's 1st hand accounts of the civil war from the view point of people 16 and under who fought in the civil war. ETA The Anti Slavery Alphabet poem book-very interesting http://www.gutenberg.org/files/16081/16081-h/16081-h.htm
Our library has it, so it is on the list. (Not doing the civil war until the end of this school year though.)
Across Five Aprils- Civil War Rifles for Watie- Civil War Not sure when your history starts, but DS read "Blood on the River, Jamestown 1607" by Elisa Carbone (I think). He said it was good. Johnny Tremain- Revolutionary War Check out the Dear America diary series- there are several titles in these time periods. "Dear America, The Winter of Red Snow" is about Valley Forge. MT3
I've heard of that one too but haven't looked into it. I thought since my kids are so young they might enjoy it, especially my 8 year old. I think it will really highlight the difference in society then and now, which is one of my favorite things about history, seeing how differently they viewed things and did things in different eras. Could you imagine how people would react to child American soldiers in today's world?
Josie, you really need to check out some on my web page. My children's ages cover a five year stretch, so I have books at a variety of levels, from picture books to novels. One I would REALLY suggest for older students is Voices of the American Civil War: Stories of Men, Women, and Children Who Lived Through the War Between the States It is VERY interesting! And I'm told that there is a similar book dealing with the Revolution, but I wasn't aware of it at the time.
For the Civil War, we will be reading My America: My Brother's Keeper: Virginia's Civil War Diary, Book One by Mary Osborne as well as watching exerpts of the films Gettysburg and Ken Burn's Civil War.
Oh! OH! Here's one I forgot all about until just now cleaning up and finding a book list (which really doesn't have anything else on it you'd be interested in). The Reb and the Redcoats by Constance Savery It's interesting, because it's about a Colonial POW in England. He's being held prisoner in an estate, and the children of the estate have befriended him. The children's uncle (who owns the estate) is very prejudiced against him, because he (uncle) was a friend of the British spy that was killed when Benedict Arnold tried to betray West Point. So that whole story plays a part in the book. It's a very interesting book!
