I went to HS gym & swim at the Y today. I talked with another HS mom whose been HSing for 20 something years. She was telling me about how christian liberty academy has online standardized tests you can have your kids take for $25 (CAT). She does them the end of every year and this satisfies her and the school for end of year reporting. You guys prob know all about this but I was just thrilled LOL. I just signed up for it and am having Luke take the end of grade 1 test just to see where he's at. I'll have him take it again in the spring to see if he is ready for grade 2 or if we will do a full first grade curriculum in the fall. For some reason this completely settled all my fears. Maybe that sounds weird but I think as HSing parents we always question ourselves and fear we are missing something or not doing it right. I think this will really help me to see what he needs to work on this year so next year when I have to actually start reporting I will have a plan and curriculum all set. Even if its some second grade and some first grade. So, yeah, I'm a dork who is really excited about my kid taking a standardized test LOL. I actually had him so excited he wanted to do the test tonight!

My kids just had to take the MAP test afterschool yesterday at the school. Ugh....it took 4 hours! But, it's done until the end of the year....when they gotta do it again. It is kinda nice to know what they are strong and weak in. If it were just me....I'd pass (especially if I had to pay for it). But, since this is one of the very few requirements of the program we are in, I just go along with it.

He finished it! I basically sat w him the whole time encouraging and bribing him to keep going. It was good cause I could see what questions he didn't know or understand. I think for a 5 yo he scored very well in everything considering its a test for students entering second grade. But it also helped me to see there's nothing wrong with taking the next couple years really slow and not trying to jump to like fifth grade reading just cause he scored high in it.

I'm anti-standardized tests (esp for homeschoolers) but I HAVE to test my son (state law) at the end of the year, I was going to use the CAT anyway but I did not know they had an online version!
