Is there a learning disability that goes along with memory problems?? Just wondering because my 14 year old son forgot how to tie his shoes yesterday.. We have instances where this happens with him.. He will eventually remember again after a few hours.. This shows up in his schoolwork too, especially math.. He is really struggling and I don't know how to approach the school on the matter to get the right testing done for him.. Any suggestions on what I could do to get him some help?

He suffered a major concussion the beginning of August but I dont think that has anything to do with it.. He has forgotten more since then but this was something that would happen even before that occured..

I would consult a neurologist. That sounds like something more than a LD.

I started to give you a website but I am not allowed to yet due to being a new member but do a google search (14 year old memory lost test) and there are different test you can give him for free which would give you some idea of what's going on. Hope that helps.

I would check in with the doc just to rule that out, but he is 14 and they do become forgetful as they change sometimes, but just the same...

I have a couple of ideas/comments for you.

First, don't rule out his concussion. It very well may be contributing to the memory issues. Could he have hit his head and some point prior to his concussion? He may have had a mild concussion that would have caused his prior memory issues. Then when he sustained a more moderate concussion, it made the memory even worse. I would ask for a consult to a neurologist or at the very least, CT scan. Not every injury shows up but its worth a try.

Second, is he taking any medications? My daughter takes allergy and asthma medicines (see my other posts!) and I know she has had memory issues for years due to them. Maybe check a website called www.askapatient.com for reviews from people using the meds.

I sure hope you find out what's causing your son's memory problems.

Completely agree with Mom 2 3's first post and definately a neurologist! MRI and CT scan coming out normal does not rule out a neurologist!!! Have him checked, as forgetting to tie a shoe isn't normal teenage forgetfulness.

Second the concussion. My DH has had several concussions, the last one in Feb '09, and it was over a year before I noticed improvement with his memory (it wasn't that great to begin with).
DD has terrible troubles with memory (she does have Epilepsy & ADD) and we spend lots of time repeating and showing her how to do things....over and over. It wouldn't hurt to consult a neurologist who may recommend testing to check things out.
I see that your son is back in school. Have you chatted with his teacher(s)? Could you request the school do some testing/evaluations? That is a great place to start.
Best of luck to you and your son!!
