I need 1 chapter book for students grades 3-6 to read through during our book club next semester. I want it to be appealing to boys and girls and shouldn't be either Christian or against Biblical values. The kids will have 12 weeks to read it. Suggestions?
Twelve weeks is what is stumping me- but is it that they will have at least 12 weeks to read? Snow Treasure by Marie McSwigan Justin Morgan Had a Horse by Marguerite Henry A Cricket in Times Square by George Selden E.B. White books Call It Courage by Armstrong Sperry Those are a couple of ones that come to mind. If the kids are a little older in the range, maybe Rifles for Watie by Harold Keith? Carry On, Mr Bowditch by Jean Lee Latham? MT3
Roald Dahl books would work too I think or the E.B. White that has been mentioned. Mrs Frisby and the Rats of NIHM is a favorite here, or From the Mixed up Files of (insert the crazy name that is not coming to me).
Alice in Wonderland Wizard of Oz Black Beauty Charlie and the Chocolate Factory James and the Giant Peach
The Great Turkey Walk, The Sign of the Beaver, The Door in the Wall, Misty of Chincoteague, A Wrinkle in Time
Our book club is reading Ginger Pye this month and it is a very cute book. Around 4th to 5th grade level.
Bridge to Terrebithia Because of Winn Dixie The Mysterious Benedict Society The Keeper of the Doves The Boys Against the Girls Frindle if you're ending somewhere near Christmas, you could do The Best Christmas Pagaent Ever. Hmmmmmmmm.....
Oh, forgot about Andrew Clements books! My sons liked several of those. We did a pen pal unit with "Extra Credit" that was fun and interesting!
Yes. Our Spring semester at co-op will meet 12 times (there's probably a holiday or two in there that will mean the semester is actually 13-14 weeks). I will divide the book over the 12 weeks so even the struggling readers will be able to swallow it. Then when we get together at co-op, I'll have discussion questions, maybe an activity, and maybe a worksheet or something. Mostly though, it will be a regular old book club conversation.
