I was talking to a mom from our homeschool group yesterday about chapter books to read to her 5yr old. She said he is happy to sit for an hour or more just listening to her read, but she's running out of ideas. They've read all the Little House series (three times now) and he loves those. She's looking for something similar, but with a little boy as the main character.
The hard part is that he doesn't like "intense" scenes in the books so things like the Narnia books would be a little much for him. She tried Hank the Cowdog, but he didn't like those at all.
Anyone have any good suggestions specifically for little boys?

At that age my ds enjoyed:

    The Box Car Children Series
    The Magic Tree House Series
    Nate the Great Books
    Jigsaw Jones Books
    Encyclopedia Brown

I think we also started some of the Beverly Clearly stuff then.

We have just started The Voyages of Dr. Doolittle...we are enjoying it so much, I'm having a hard time not reading it to myself while they nap! Lol! Can't vouch for the whole book, since we are only on chapter five, but it seems delightful up to now. We've also enjoyed the Thornton Burgess animal stories, such as At Paddy the Beaver's Pond and The Tale of Prickly Porky!

dr dolittle is good. Boxcar children is great. Mouse and the motorcycle. and I second elmer and the dragon (or my fathers dragon). That is the first chapter book series we read. Boxcar children is very innocent but keeps them interested and there are about a million of them. Black beauty (a male horse tells the story). wind in the willows - adapted. Winnie the pooh originals.

    try the henry books
I don't remember the exact titles. they are a spin off from the ramona books.
Henry Huggins, Ribsy, Henry and Ribsy, Henry and the paper route.

I think those are some of the titles but not in order
