The problem you run into is on the actual application. Your resume won't even been glanced at unless your work history (employers, wages, years employed, etc) is filled to the brim.

So did my Dh. He's looking for a second job. He thinks it's because he was honest about stupid questions like "since you were 15 have you EVER thought about stealing something from your employer".....what kid isn't tempted? Grrrrr.....I told him the Target HR people probably prefer hiring liars I guess.

Edited to add....he has a constant history of employment and has even been a Loss Prevention agent. AND he worked for Target already as a holiday temp and they begged him to stay on permanently. It had to be something on his online app (the only kind they accept) that flagged answers.

Brooke, Target is just like Wal-Mart in that respect. They would hire liars that will steal them blind over people who tell the truth but most likely wouldn't take a pen. All because of how the computer sorts answers and puts them into a "yes" or "delete application" catagory. The local walmart just hired a well know drug dealer and last week two newly hired women stole 5000 from them. However, I am still without work, several honest people that have put in there are without work as well.

My DS can't get a job with the dollar store because of questions like, "If you found a wallet on the floor, what do you do?" They're expecting you to say, "Pick it up and turn it in," but he answered honestly, "Leave it there." We tried and tried to teach him as a child if it's not yours, leave it alone! So because of that (and I'm sure some other questions like that), he can't get hired.

That questionnaire was ridiculous! I kept thinking my answers would hurt me on some of it--especially the parts about being a leader. I'm not a leader, and I was honest on those questions. We can't all be leaders!

I don't know about Target, but our company's online stuff results in the ideal score of 50%. We want people who are useful but moldable, able to lead but also able to follow.

I actually thought my answers were mostly middle-off-the road. It also asked about whether or not my family had been on WIC, SNAP, SSS, or any other government assistance during the last 6 months. I haven't, but thought that was rather personal. I *think* businesses are given federal funds for hiring those who have, so it seems like they could have an advantage.

I've also heard that Target strives to keep everything politically correct. There were several questions about politics on their questionnaire. Maybe that's what threw me out! LOL!! Really, I had been turned down by Target before, so I wasn't expecting a call from them.

Home Depot asked the same questions about government assistance, but not the same individual questionnaire stuff. Their's was more about handling situations that arise in the workplace with co-workers.

What about something online? Before life got so crazy that I stopped working all together, I worked part-time as an independent contractor for Babbletype (transcription) and Lionbridge (internet rating positions). Lionbridge was paying $13.50/hr when I stopped working for them, Babbletype was less than that. However, Babbletype pays weekly (or maybe it was every two weeks--I can't remember), while Lionbridge pays monthly.

I'd love an online job! It would be perfect. I can't do transcription. (Doesn't that certification cost money?). I did apply at Tutors.com, but currently they are only hiring college level tutors. I'll check out Lionbridge. I will need a fairly steady paycheck, since we are barely making it now.

I also opened an Etsy store for some things, I've made, but I really don't have the money to put into much until something is coming in!!

Thanks so much.. Guess what got told no again today. But, like I told dh they told me I couldn't homeschool both my girls through high school and I did and I will find something just might have to look harder but I know I will.

I read on here something about resume.. How the heck do you do a resume when you haven't work in the work force in over 20 years? How do I fill one out... Any ideas would be wonderful....

There are different types of resumes. They don't all have to read like a job application with job title and company in reverse chronological order. Some list skills and accomplishments instead of specific jobs. Google 'types of resumes' or something similar and you should get some ideas.

The problem is, like PP said, you run into the problem when you fill out the application and there is no recent job history.

In the past, to make sure the gap in employment is addressed on the application, I have put 'self-employed' for the SAHM gap in 'real' employment (but I did own my own business for a couple of years so it wasn't a totally lie-I just fudged the dates a bit to cover the gap better LOL). At least that way it is addressed on the application. I figure it wasn't going to hurt me any worse than having an 'unexplained' gap....Maybe you could put "Homeschool Teacher" to explain your gap....

dont forget to put down volunteer services. I have not worked since 2003 but I have volunteered in the communities I have lived in. A job where I am at right now isn't too easy to get. First the military has to hire so many Japanese before hiring Americans. Quite honestly I am okay with them hiring locally because we have many Japanese spouses who dont speak English very well.. Also it's a big pain to work at home because of stupid military legal issues and you cannot have a business that competes against our military store, NEX. It's mostly because we are overseas, im sure of it.
When I go back to the states I plan to get a part time job after we are settled. I will be listing my volunteer services that I have done.

I don't volunteer, not really any place to do such around here. I could drive 60 miles to the nearest animal shelter. Don't really have the gas money, but you have a good idea! I applied at Stage today, a friend told me they were looking for someone to unload freight. The manager took my application but had to be alerted that I had walked in, even though she was just a few feet from me and there were two more girls behind the counter completely ignoring me. Is that the type personality it takes to work in retail (that isn't walmart or target ect.)? It just struck me as odd that no one even bothered to look up. I could have been a customer, they didn't know different until after the manager spoke. I somehow doubt I get the job because of the vibe I got from the manager, that and it's a "mans job" I would guess. Keeping my head up and trying again, even though I think it's programming for management positions to give people the run around these days. They wouldn't want me to waste their time, why waste mine ya know?

call County Social services. Go to churches. Visit nursing homes. Create your own volunteer opportunities. Put on a program at the local school as a fundraiser. Show that you can commit, you can organize, you can plan.

The local agricultural extension service around here would be beyond THRILLED to have an adult volunteer to head up a 4H club. I've helped in this arena for years and last week, I was emailed a job description that I would LOVE to do. (I'll have to wait 15 years to be able to take that job) And I have no job history, other than homeschooling and no college. You may have to put yourself out there, but you can gain skill and demonstrate your talents if you want.

Ask your child's teacher what you can do in the classroom to help.

There's also a company called Textbroker if you are a decent writer to write web content.

Good News! I found employment at an industrial parts painting company. I had given up looking and was going to go back to school to get my welding certification next semester. This came along and it's better than a fast food chain, a convenience store, or walmart. Now, this is day two and I peeled tape until my fingertips are sore, swollen, and cracked. Plus, everyone there seems to operate on a completely seperate wave length. It's a lot like they don't have individual personalities and are just one lump of the same thing...it's odd. It's not a full 40 unless you stay late by yourself, I'm spending more on gas than I was at first, I MISS MY KID. I guess that's it flat out, I MISS MY KID. If i quit now the bills will still be paid, I don't know how long I should wait to see if I can ride this out, Friday wasn't great, today wasn't much better, it has to get better somewhere right?
