My 4 y/o had routine lab work done, and they found high levels of both glucose and ketones in his urine. He's going back for a full metabolic work-up tomorrow. His grandpa has type 1 diabetes. Any chance this is a fluke? He had a fruit & grain bar for breakfast and kinda picked at his bacon ... too sugary?? His BMI is in the 10th percentile - tall and skinny like his dad & grandpa. He's mostly a vegetarian (by choice) and eats a pretty balanced diet (dad and big brother, on the other hand, could live on cold pizza if I'd let them!). I can always tell when he's coming down with a fever virus, because he drinks tons of water, but otherwise, I don't think he drinks too much. Any words of wisdom?
I have type 2 diabetes. I don't know as much about type 1, but if his grandpa has it, he could too. I know several people who have type one, and none of them are overweight. Being sick can cause blood sugars to rise, which COULD be the thirstiness when he's getting sick (or it may have nothing to do with blood sugar). I've known kids (when I worked in PS) who had type 1 diabetes. They've managed it very well. Praying that you get answers today. Try not to worry.
Try not to sweat it. Yes, it will require a lot of adjusting and some lifestyle changes BUT far better to learn this now than to learn it later on after damage has been done. Far easier to learn all this while he is young than to be diagnosed in the rebellious teen years. If he's going back tomorrow and they didn't tell you to have him fast, do so (for 8 hours) then they see the results when his body isn't digesting food (not even water). I will NEVER forget the day I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (2 years ago). I cried like a baby and felt as if I had been given a death sentence BUT that comes from living with a husband who is a brital/non-compliant diabetic. Anything that could go wrong with him, has and I was absolutely terrified that the same would happen to me. Difference being that I've chosen to take charge of my diabetes and NOT live the way that he has. My long term goal is to get off these pills they want me to take but I have more adjusting to do before that is a reality for me. It's a scary diagnosis but diabetics can and do live normal active lives just like anyone else does..... if they so choose. Praying for you
I had diabetes when I was pg with my first, but not when I was pg with him. This was a fasting test, by the way. The previous one wasn't. They didn't do a glucose challenge, which surprised me. I'm mostly just not looking forward to constantly poking him if this comes out the way I think it will. He had IgG deficiency as a baby (outgrew it when he was 3), so he's been poked WAY too many times in his life already.
THAT is GOOD news..... now the question (in my mind) remains why there were ketones in his urine and his initial blood work was elevated
I don't know. The nurse called with results. I didn't get to speak to the doctor. My only guess is that he may have been dehydrated (he'd just gotten over a cold) and had a sugary breakfast (a NutriGrain bar).
Actually, a low carb diet will cause ketones in urine, not high carb diet (This is what makes the Atkins diet and others like it so unhealthy...and dangerous) However the being sick and dehydrated may be the cause. Glad he doesn't have Type 1.
Yeah, I know. I meant that might be why he had BOTH ketones & glucose in his urine. Both were high (didn't tell me the levels).
