I have recently become very interested in McGuffey's Readers, and I looked them up and they really seem to be the type of books I want my kids learning from. Well, I found all the readers for FREE on KINDLE! YAY!! However, there are no pictures, just text, but it's formatted well. Free is really good (unless it's a dirty chair on the side of the road, and then free isn't always the way to go. lol). Here is the deal...My husband and I depend on our Tax Refund Check to come in the mail in Late Februaryr Early March. We each get a small amount of money to spend on ourselves (see here: very small)I wanted to buy the ACTUAL McGuffey's books, rather than the Kindle Version with no Pictures. Which do you prefer? Real books, or Kindle books? Is there any other options than the ones I listed? Any other reading apps that would give me free (or very cheap) McGuffey's WITH pictures?
I don't know about McGuffey's but I use a combination of kindle and paperback for our read aloud chapter books. When we run out of hard copy I jump on sonlight's reading lists and find a kindle version of some of the books when I'm in a bind. I know for my kids, no pictures would be a deal breaker but they are little and I'm sure it just depends on the kid and their learning style.
You can download the PDFs (for free) with pics-you can then read them on your computer or print them out. http://www.freechristiancurriculum....e=cat&keywords=recent&sortby=name&cat=Reading There are also some free tutor videos you can use with them. ETA: You might also want to consider http://www.dollarhomeschool.com/ come tax time-lots of good stuff.
The free Gutenberg copies have the pictures. I can use the PDF version on my reader to view the pictures and text. But I'm not sure how it works on the Kindle. They have a Kindle version with no pictures, so does the Kindle not work with pictures? http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/14642
I have the McGuffey hardcovers, and the pictures do not add anything to text, in my opinion. They are black and white "old-fashioned" drawings and my kids really got nothig out of them. In fact, they called them lame. You should be able to get a lot of use out of them as is on Kindle.
I am using McGuffey on the Nook with my son. I love it because I can change the font size, which I assume would work the same on the Kindle. I usually make the font larger for DS because he is dyslexic, and sometimes loses his place in the text when reading smaller print. Having no pictures actually works better for us because DS is a "guesser" and doesn't always read the text, but tries to figure out the story based on the pictures. Having text only means that he has to focus on what is on the page.
Both. I'm also a "real book" person, but Dh got me a Kindle for my birthday. I am really amazed by how much I use it!!! It's much easier to take with me, since I can carry many books at once. The local library was WONDERFUL at sitting down with me and explaining how I can download loans on it!!! But not all books are available for it, so we still do "real books", too. Also, my Kindle doesn't do pictures. I think it was an older, cheaper model. Oh, the Baldwin Project also has downloadable books, but they are not free (like Guttenburg). However, you can pull them up and read them for free from your computer. It just can't save your place.
Thanks everyone for your input! I am really liking the Kindle McGuffey's! I don't think I will buy the hardcover books, after using this!! ShellChelle, my oldest is a guesser, too, so I think having no pictures is a really good thing in this case.
Kindle for PC is software that can be downloaded for free from Amazon.com. It will allow you to uses kindle formatted files on the computer.
I have both the PDF copies and the hardback book copies. It is nicer for us to sit on the sofa and read the hardback book copies but if we are out and about, the PDF ones on an e-reader can be nice too. I use a mixture of books and e-books with my younger one (she's six).
