Many states that are upset with the election results and residents signing petitions asking to secede..... whether it happens or not remains to be seen but there seems to be a growing interest. Last time I looked, there were 26

Yeah, there are thousands to tens of thousands of people in several states (a tiny fraction of the states' actual populations!) signing petitions that request permission to leave the union. It's 99.9999999999% not going to happen, though. This happens after every election. People say they're moving to Canada, or people say their state is calling it quits. It's like your 2 year old asking for a Snickers bar for dinner. It's probably not going to happen.

TX is currently the only state with enough votes for the petition to count. When we lived there, I went to church with one of the state representatives. He says it won't happen mainly because states would have no way to defend themselves (no military).

I dunno, organized military they may not have at the moment, but I bet Texans could defend themselves pretty well. If the families I know are any reflection of the majority of the population, well, don't mess with Texas. ;)

There are more than Texas with enough for the petition to count. I know Louisiana does, too. I read today that forty different states have the petitions going.

i went to the linkk shelby posted and SEVERAL states have one, all started in november. Arkansas has over 19,000 votes 25,000 being roughly 10% of our population. Texas has over 50,000. The report I heard made it sound like such a big deal, yet I`ve seen very little coverage.

States by themselves have no way to feed all it's inhabitants, provide power, electricity, water, and fuel. They also have no military. You can petition all you want, but succession from the U.S. is illegal. Plain and simple. Of course there has been little coverage! This is going to cause nothing but civil unrest, moving towards a civial war. One side against the other, American's slaughtering American's for their beliefs and way of life.

Plus, all those petitions go directly to teh White house. Do you really want this president to look at the signatures and see your name? I don't want him to see mine on there!

the petitions are on whitehouse.gov As far as feeding and providing for their citzens, after all i`ve read, all seceded states would band together and form a new country, or so it seems. Maybe one or five states couldn`t, 40 probably could. Probably couldn`t afford to keep a lot of those on welfare in the life they are accustomed. A lot of us, especially in the southern states, we are used to working hard without pay, farming, hunting, building, none of which has anything to do with government. Seceded or not, we`ll be fine.

No, it's NOT illegal! At least, not according to the Constitution. We were originally 13 SEPERATE ENTITIES who decided to join together for joint benefit. But when any one entity felt they no longer benefited, they had the right to break away. However, I think it would take nothing short of another civil war for it to actually come about. But look at the former Soviet Union. Who'd a thunk it? And I think it could happen here just as easily.

Sour grapes. Both sides claim to wear the mantle of democracy but the losers always complains about the result!

"We want the will of the people to be done...We believe in the Constitution...We believe in the power of freedom and democracy...Those idiots voted for what? They prefer their policies over ours? That's ridiculous - we're going to secede."

Lousiana must have gotten lots more yesterday! When I saw the article, they were close, but didn't have the numbers yet. I believe there were only 26 states involved when I saw it.

Texas actually can supply it's own electricity, water, and oil, I believe (based on what I heard after the 2008 election when I lived there). It also has some kind of clause in it's state laws allowing it to secede. I don't know about other states. The state's governor, Rick Perry, does not support the petition.

I'm not sure where I just saw a map of states involved in this but I saw every state except for 2 of them involved (but I admit I haven't looked to see if it is real or not).

I love watching documentaries and such about the civil war (because it really was a fascinating war) and one of the neat facts I learned in one was before the civil war it was grammatically correct "the United States of America are..." after the war it was grammatically correct to say "the United States of America is..."

I saw this on yahoo a few days ago. They said that the petitions were mostly symbolical, as a way to show dissatisfaction over the election results.

I find it very hard to believe this would actually happen. Maybe people are really disgruntled, yes. But when push would come to shove, I think many people would rethink their idea.

Anyone can start a petition on whitehouse.gov however it would take the state itsself applying for permission to secede to do any real work. Though, a state shouldn't have to ask. It is not illegal to secede, or so our forefathers wrote. If they could only see the country now... I doubt they could find much good to say... I love this country. I don't think it is even close to what they had in mind.

The article I read also said that some states had reached the minimum required (25000)to get an offical response from the White House.

But if the state itself has to petition, then yes, nothing is going to happen. Rick perry already said he doesn't support the petition of Texans, and I'm sure most politicians will follow suit.

It isn't right though, I think. No matter which side of the line you stand on, dividing the country will mean there will be no more USA as we know it. I am sure no one really wants that.
