We're using FLL right now. I like it, but I don't like the scripted setup, so I typically don't read the script, it's annoying. My son enjoys the program and is working well with it! However, I'm a little disappointed that the section on pronouns. He needs review, and I know I can review with him before moving on, but I also wanted to look into what else is out there.

I have 3 children, and I don't want to have to continually buy workbooks every year, which is why I'm looking into R&S, and PLL, since they are non-consumable. I have read great things about R&S and I love what I see on the samples, the setup seems really good, and he typically doesn't mind having to write in his notebook.

I want thorough, but save money!

One moment I'm set on switching to R&S (Grade 2), the next moment I'm thinking that I'll stick with FLL. I just don't know!! I also like the looks of Primary Language Lessons, especially for the price, covering so many years, however, it doesn't seem like the popular pick (not that it has to be, I just have found less reviews).

Honestly for LA, we use cheap Total Reading workbooks. My kids like it and it gets the job done.

R&S works very well for us.

Phillip had to figure out something the other day (which he couldnl't), and he actually tried to DIAGRAM IT IN HIS MIND to figure it out!!! (What we actually ended up doing was to resort to the Easy Grammar method...mark out prepositional phrases, and work with what was left!)

I don't understand what all the abbreviations mean. MM, MUS, FLL, Pll, R&S

I am assuming they are all different types of curriculum but I'm lost because I have no idea what those letters all stand for.

Right now I am using Comprehensive Curriculum of Basic Skills books for both my boys and then I have spectrum science and Geography that we are using. We also read non fiction and fiction books from the library. We do a bible verse every morning for their cursive writing practice and we do a bible study course that I obtained thru our congregation.

For now this seems to be working out well for us. I have gotten the spectrum science and geography for next year also because my boys really like them. I also got some books about the united states presidents, Ancient Rome and the Rennisance that we will work on next year or whenever they finish what they are working on now. I plan to move them right into the next books when they finish what they are doing now. I might give them a week for a break before we start the new ones.

I am on my third with First Language Lessons 2, second with 3. I like it and the kids have or are doing well with it. I have the combo level 1/2 that I bought back in 2006. My younger two will be using Level 3 at the same time but at different lessons. I just scan the student page for the one who is in it now and the other will use the regular page. My oldest has gone onto Rod and Staff. She is at level 6 and right now I wished we did grade 5 instead of trying other LA's out there. If we get the chance to have another child, I plan to use First Language Lessons and then switch to Rod and Staff after they completed FLL.

    You assume correctly :)

    MM is Math Mammoth
    MUS is Math You See
TT is Teaching Textbooks (also in a current thread ;) )

FLL is First Language Lessons, which is often paired with WWE Writing with Ease (both of these are from the same people who wrote The Well Trained Mind and Story of the World or SOTW)
PLL is Primary Language Lessons which is a vintage text that was rewritten (I think)
    R&S is Rod and Staff
WRTR is one you see often, it's Writing Road to Reading
AAS is another common one.. All About Spelling they also now have AAR All About Reading

    RSO is REAL Science Odyssey
RS4K is Real Science for Kids
    HO is History Odyssey

There are many many more to learn, but you have started out like I did, using CC and Spectrum workbooks... I also love the Total workbooks for Reading (language arts) and all of the Complete Book of books that are all along the same lines.

Thank you! I have ordered R&S used for a great price, and I ordered PLL used for a great price, so I'll be able to try both. I did look over the PLL free Google book, and I liked it for the most part. I will see which works, if I don't like one over the other, etc, I'll re-sell them, and if anything, I may use a little of 2 curriculum's to fill in what needs review.

It'll be great if R&S or PLL works well for us being non-consumable, but if we find that we still prefer FLL, I have the option to be able to stick with it.

I know sometimes, looking over a curriculum is different than actually DOING the curriculum. It could look great, and be your child's style of learning, but then be a bust. If anything, these 2 programs may suit my daughter who will be starting these things in a year or two, and then I have a younger son as well, who could use them in the future. For the price, I think it'll be nice to have them on hand, to use as fill in's or just to have to determine what works best!

If these do not work, I will stay with FLL until level 4, and likely move into R&S like others have said they have done!

Thank you all for your input!
