Thats kinda what I thought. I have gotten repeat gifts before from my husbands grandparents. His grandma and I are both into Nora Roberts books, and often for Christmas and Birthday I will get a series or a few books or twn! lol. I have gotten PLENTY of repeats, but I NEVER say anything. It seems...ungrateful, I think is the word I'm looking for. Like, "yea thanks, but....try again Grammy." I just keep them and pass them on to someone else who likes that particular author and say thank you very much. I'm honored that they know what kind of books I like and took the time to find some for me and buy them...especeially in this tough economy.

I agree. I have told my kids that regardless of the gift, you say a genuine thank you. The thank you is not for WHAT the gift is, but for the time and thought the person put into it. Later, we'll quietly exchange it or pass it on to someone else if it's not something they wanted.

This year, my DD11 got a set of craft loops (the kind you weave into potholders with the little plastic loom) from DH's mom. It was JUST the loops, though, no loom. She quietly brought it and showed me because she didn't know what to do. I told her we'd take care of it later. She went to grandma and said thank you for the gifts and that was that. We'll pick up a loom next time we go to the store. :)

I had to say a "genuine thank you" this year! My mil bought me a towel set. Uh, OK.... Just one set. They don't match my bathroom. I don't know if she heard me complaining about the kids using "my" towel or what. So I smiled very sweetly and said a very genuine thank you. However, she also got me a $30 gift card to the quilt store, so THAT more than makes up for it!

I do them a lot of times for my brother, but not always. He lives about3hrs away so it's hard to get him something since I don't know what he has and he never has suggestions. Last yr I gave him a lunchbox w/ a giftcard to subway in it. Honestly the lunchbox was just to make it harder for him to guess the gift(part of our tradition most years is hiding the gift to make it unrecognizable). Another time I got him a giftcard to gamestop since he loves video games but I don't know what to get him and put the card inside a giftcard maze he had to solve to get to the caard

I don't mean to "Bump" the thread but I just wanted to say Thanks to everyone. I ended up buying my 1st gift card this year and it turned out great. My niece is always very gracious and thankful for any gift but I didn't think she usually liked them much. So I really wanted to get her something she would like.

Anyway, again I just wanted to thank you guys for making me feel better about it!

Faythe got two gift cards for Barnes and Noble. This week, they're having their Teacher Appreciation sale...DVDs 10% off with a Teacher's Card, everything else I thnk 25% off. So we went yesterday, and she was able to buy two Redwall books and a puzzle . And she was really thrilled with the Redwall books...they were the last two she needed to complete her set.

I got my $25 card to the quilt shop!!! But the kids did NOT get a movie card. My BIL has had some reduced circumstances lately, and had to cut back. And the kids were fine with that. We sure don't want him spending on our kids more than he can afford!
