I wrote a long explaination and my computer had a spaz and lost all of it. So long story short, Miss 6 might have to start ps in at the end of July  if we can't get off the govenment benefit. Due to various things last year Miss 6 is still doing 1st grade work, so we're trying to get that finished and catch up on the 2nd grade work so that if she does end up in ps then she'll be up to speed with the other kids (don't want to feed the gossip-mongers nattering at the school gates).

Oh no...I hope things work out okay for you. I wouldn't worry about the people at the school gates though....their opinions shouldn't matter. Anyway, hang in there and try not to stress too much : )

Relax. I bet she knows way more than you think she does! Remember, the first quarter of the year is pretty much a review of the previous year, so she will be exposed to anything they did that she didn't.

It's not really much different than a student moving from one school to another. No 2 teach the same things. Heck, I can remember in 4th grade thinking how strange it was that the one classroom learned all this nature stuff and "patriotic" stuff and we, well we just didn't?? I don't know what the heck we learned but it wasn't the same thing as that classroom.

She will do just fine, no matter what happens ;)

Thanks, I've calmed down a bit since posting. We had a slow year last year due to various issues, then we took three months off when I had baby, and we've just had 6 weeks off to move house, holidays, etc. So that's where most of my fears were coming from.

TeacherMom she's nearly 7 so if she were in ps she'd be starting 2nd grade next week (the New Zealand school year starts between Jan 28th and Feb 7th this year). We've got a several weeks of 1st grade to finish before moving onto 2nd grade work.

Our lovely minister of social development is trying to pass a bill and, if she succeeds, families receiving a government benefit won't be allowed to homeschool because both parents will have to be available to work so our children will have to childcare/preschool/school  The bill violates human rights and discriminates against beneficiaries

oh wow, Okay I am sorry I forgot you were in NewZealand. Not being sure what you have for curriculum I would go to the beinging of each unit, chapter whatever and read over the objectives then go on through it hitting the things she needs to know still.
One of my kids tested out of one of her books because she already got what it was about and went through just taking quizes for each chapter, instead of the daily work, she would read then quiz, instead of the busy work. But only you will know if that will work with her.

Being in a different country than I am makes a big difference. Can you test her levels and see what she needs to go on to second?

    Ouch Emjay... That sucks!

I had a friend forced to put her kids in daycare by social services. Same kind of thing. They'd cut her off of Social Assistance if she didn't go to school full time to "get a skill". Thankfully she got a hair dressing course and was back home in 6 months with approval because "she tried".

Sometimes Mom just needs to be home with the kids. That shouldn't be something the gov't can interfere with. Hope that bill doesn't pass!

That sucks that she had to leave her kids, I'm glad it was only for 6 months.

Ok, so it's mainly English that we need to work on, everything else will get covered in revision. She's a very reluctant reader and so we have barely touched English. Any advice on how to encourage a reluctant reader?

Read aloud to them LOTS. That's the only thing I can think of! If you cam instill a love of literature, she will eventually want to read.

I am sure it was good for mom to get the side job as well though, glad it was only 6 months in day care but the hair cutting job will assure her she can support her home school adventures so its all good. I dont think we home schoolers should be forced to rely on state paying for our schooling our kids, once the state is involved they will take over so its good she got away from that!
