Hello, and nice to meet ya'll! My name is Joy and I live in the wonderful state of Louisiana. Baton Rouge to be exact. I have two beautiful children (Jonah-5 and Avery-3), a husband, and a beagle. My son is currently attending public school Kindergarten, and I dislike it strongly. I don't want to say I HATE it... He is in a gifted class, which I love, and I absolutely love his teachers...

But, he is only learning his alphabet (which he had learned when he was 2) and they are not helping him to read AT ALL. He loves to read, but the rest of his class isn't quite up to speed with reading quite yet. I taught him to read. I taught him how to write. I taught him his shapes, and how to count. I taught him all these things, and now he is at a first grade level. He is not being mentally stimulated at his public school Kindergarten. Period.

Which brought me to the lovely idea of homeschooling. I am a stay-at-home mother already, and I feel that homeschooling would benefit our family for years to come... For a variety of reasons. I am going to let my son finish Kindergarten this year, and we will start up after summer break. As of right now, I am working with my 3 year old.

I have a LOT of questions, so I'm sure you will see more of me around.

    God bless!
    -Joy

    Welcome

    Hi Joy,
Your son Jonah sounds alot like my oldest son Nicholas. He learned to read at 3 years old. I didn't push him. He learned everything quickly and he really pushed me to teach him more. My personal belief is that if they are ready to learn then teach them! I know that some people will say that you should wait to teach them to read until 1st or 2nd grade, but I don't believe in holding them back.

    Welcome to the spot!

We decided to let my son finish K before pulling him as well. Homeschooling is so fun and freeing after the PS experience.

Hey, Joy, nice to "meet" you!

I had my DGS for awhile when he was 4, and he was beginning to learn sounds and write letters. Then he went back to mommy and daddy and to public kindy. Blech! They promised he'd be reading by the end of the year ... yeah, right! He actually regressed. He started public first grade, but by the end of about 8 weeks, his parents decided (yay!) that grandma's school was way better suited to his needs! He's not gifted, just a regular kid, but except for the occasional "Idon'wanna" days, he's coming right along. He's in second this year, but we're still finishing up first grade reading and language arts. We're starting second next week in those subjects. That's okay, because he's with grandma! He's right where he should be in math and everything else!

I also have a tiny little one-room school where I teach Other People's Kids. This year I have 2nd, 8th, and two 9th. No, I will not be applying for Jindal's vouchers. Don't get me started on public school. I worked there for 20 years. Blech.
