This is my little vent I guess. It seems like we have not gotten anything done. We only get about 3 days of schooling a week if that these days. Those days are not really even good quality days a lot of the time. My daughter who is 22 married in October. Her husband has 50/50 custody of his children for a pervious marriage. So that makes me a grandma! We adore those children. My daughter kept telling me something was very wrong with the 5 year old girl twin. They kept taking her to dr and got nothing but ah its nothing dont worry. They kept on until they finally got a dr to listen to them. The week before Christmas Allison was diagnosed with Ewings Sarcome Cancer. Our precious little 5 year old is in the fight for her life. Everyones life is turned upside down at moment. There are other children who also need to be cared for. Plus I want to be at hospital for her and my daughter and son in law as much as possible too. Allison will call and ask me to come to hospital to see her. So of course I am out the door and on my way. The hospital is over an hour away. I also live an hour away in the other direction from my daughter. A lot of our time is spent on the road these days. I feel bad for even complaining because not one time has Allison complained. Even when that baby is so sick she cant sit up she does not complain. She has a smile that lights up the room even on bad days. She had been so sick the other day and I asked her how she was doing and she replied " a little good". She didnt say nana sherie I am so sick why me? She teaches me so much about being positive and being happy no matter what is going on. I guess I reminded myself with this post that life is precious and no matter what happens today a good attitude is always possible. God is touching so many people through this amazing little girl. So I am gonna get accomplished today what I can and the rest can wait I suppose. Sometimes I just start to feel the pressure of getting back on tract.

What an amazing little girl she must be! We could all learn a lot from her, lessons way more valuable than "school". Don't worry about what "school" you are not getting done. Look at all the life lessons, which mean so much more in the end, that your family is learning. Allow yourself to just live in this moment and "school" will happen when it's meant to. (((hugs)))

Thanks crazymama! I just sometimes start to feel the pressure of needing to get my 8 year old on "grade level" we have many teachers in our church and they also teach her sunday school and sunday night classes. They have never said anything but know their feelings on homeschool. I just get into panic mode on occasion I think. My daughter is so overwhelmed right now also. She is angry at Allie for getting sick. She is use to being the center of my world and all of a sudden our focus is on Allison and the other kids as well. Guess I just needed to vent and hear from others that its ok and not to stress about it.

Please, don't take this the wrong way... but if you are being silently judged by these people who teach little kids Sunday school, then maybe they aren't the best people to be teaching your child how to be a good Christian. It's also people like that who make me choose not to be a Christian (among other reasons).

Sorry but those "teachers" can go shove it, just because they went to a college and got a piece of paper saying that THEY conform to thinking the way that they were told to, does not mean that any of them are right in the way children should be educated! My 8 year old just finished the 1st grade math book today. We are halfway through what is technically her 2nd grade year, do I think she is behind... heck no! She is working where she needs to in everything. Her reading book this week has been Curious George Gets A Medal.. I want to say book adventure listed it as a 1st grade book... do I care? Heck no! She is who she is and she will know how to read by the time she needs to go to college...if that is what she chooses to do! I'm not worried, kids are only kids for a short amount of time. Let them enjoy it and we should enjoy it as well!

Thanks I did need to hear that. they really are good teachers. I know how most public school teachers feel about homeschooling. They have never said anything at all to me about my daughter. I think I am just having one of those omg are we behind moments. I know it will all work out and I dont normally freak out about it. she loves her sunday school class and her teachers. I have sat through it many many times and I am ok with it. she wants to be there and thinks it is fun. If at any moment I feel anything different I wont let her go.

Soooo sorry to hear about Allison. I hope she'll recover soon!

I don't know much about it....but I've heard of something call car schooling. Google "car schooling" or "carschooling" for some ideas. I'm not really sure if it's a way to homeschool or if it's a book.

There are a lot of great cd's you could play in the car. Our favorites are States & Capitals Songs and Geography Songs. They are from Audio Memory, and they have others for math, science, and history. My daughter started listening to States & Capitals just last weekend. She's listened to it once or twice a day all week and now knows all the songs by heart already. She is so proud and every day now she pretends she's in a talent show and is performing. Of course, I'm the audience (which gets tiring for the audience to have to listen to it *again*....but I do). We have fun singing them together too. So...maybe just this little idea will help in making those long car rides into some learning time.

ETA: and I wouldn't worry so much about your younger daughter being, or getting, behind. So much of what is learned in the early grades is repeated again and again anyway. Hopefully things can fall back into place after Allie gets home and is better.

Thanks batmans wife I will look for that that. I love the cd idea. This will be a long long fight for allison. With months of chemo and surgery ahead of her. She will be in hospital atleast 7 out of every 14 days. That is the least amount of time there. sometimes its more than that. I. know in my head she will be fine and it will all come together. I am just having one of those days I think. I appreciate the encouragement. I homeschooled my other kids and they are all grown up and doing fine. I think I got a case of the what do others think of me. Thanks again !!

I shouldn't even be on here so without reading the responses, let me just say this...

Your child will learn more from life in this situation that any curriculum, textbook, or program or full 8 hours day of school could ever teach them!

Relax. Find educational videos, games, etc. Read good living books when you have the time and talk...a lot. Label yourself an unschooler for the year and don't feel guilty!

    ((((hugs))))

Maybe get Madison a special backpack or cute bag that you can put some "schoolish" type stuff in for the car rides and time sitting at the hospital. You could put in there crayons, pencils, maybe a book she'd like to read....but also some of your school work...stuff that doesn't require a lot of other stuff that would be at home (I'm thinking like handwriting, some math worksheets, a map book, etc). Last year I had to drive my son up to the high school each day for an hour, and it didn't pay to run back home, turn around and pick him back up. So, my daughter and I would go to the library to do school for awhile. She wanted a backpack to carry her school work in (she picked Phineas & Ferb)....and I had certain things in there that were easy to do away from home (like I mentioned...handwriting, maps/geography, a health book, etc)....we could get quite a bit done there in 45 minutes. Something about having her special school bag made it even better.

The beauty of homeschool is that it can be done anywhere. There have been numerous times when we have had to do school work in the car, or at Dr appts, etc.... So many things are portable. I orally quiz or talk to my boys about spelling, Awana, recent history lessons, oral math, etc.... Or they read a book while they wait for their sister at Dr appts or something. They also have bags that they can carry their portable items in, like worksheets, reading books, pencils, etc...

Mom to two boys (age 12 and 14 years,), and one daughter (age 8 months)
