I ABHORE public school!! GRRRR! My two oldest have re-entered public school this year and all we have heard from the Jr high is bashing of homeschoolers.. Today, my son had to listen to the english teacher reading a persuasive article on homeschool verses public school and why homeschool is bad.. The teacher even said "I guess it's a good thing there's nobody that's been homeschooled in this class otherwise they would be offended".. My son piped up and said that he was homeschooled for 5 years.. Same teacher that brags on how smart my kid is.. And what a GREAT writer he is.. LOL!! He was offended and said that their argument was that homeschooled children don't learn as much as public schooled kids do.. Guess public school feels the need to "educate" children AGAINST the idea of homeschool.. Ignorance.. Never mind the fact that homeschooled kids actually get real life education not a "teach to the test" education..

Well good for your son for speaking up! Isn't it great that he feels strongly enough about it to defend it?! Sounds like some ps teacher needs to do HER homework.

Why are they reading a persuasive article on that issue in English class? If they are learning how to write a persuasive essay then maybe a topic more suitable for English class is appropriate. Weird.

That's what I said... I told my husband I was going to call the school and complain.. They are there to "educate" the children. Not to teach them their views.. It annoys the CRAP out of me!!! My son begged me not to.. He said that he didn't want to get the teacher into trouble..

Many people have strong opinions on homeschooling. But teachers should not be teaching opinions. They should teaching facts. Maybe this could have been a good assignment if she divided the class up in half and one half wrote for homeschool and the other half wrote against it and then both sides could have discussed their sides and learned the pros and cons of both types of schooling. I don't know. There is probably a better way this assignment could have been done, or not at all, even better.

Definitely a sucky topic for the teacher to choose. If your son has to write a persuasive article, I would highly encourage writing one on why homeschooling is better than public school..lol

I would send in an article on the advantages of hs'ing, and tell her that she might consider persuasive articles on BOTH sides, and let the kids decide....

It's like undoing everything you've taught, which is annoying!! I think schools are getting a little worried these days. Our town has made some major cuts. My mother has been asked on a few occasions to keep my little brother home from school because the classes were under staffed. It's getting bad.

Our county has a mixed opinion. We are one of the largest homeschooling counties according to some paperwork I read somewhere. HSLDA is located in my town (right across the street from my grocery store actually).... I have had guidance counselors praise me for doing what I'm doing and helping my kids... while others have called up after pulling a child out (who requested to come home because school wasn't helping her) and told me I was ruining her.

I have friends who are principles and teachers in this county so I watch my wording very carefully when I talk to them. I haven't had too many problems with the actual TEACHERS - more with the limits put on them because of the stuff the STATE makes them do.

Our little one is in the ELL (formally ESL) class and I got a notice home that says our COUNTY didn't PASS it's state testing (HA!) for the ELL program and they are doing everything to fix it. Yet my kid couldn't pass her state tests and they weren't going to graduate her.... yeah that's a good thing....

I was wondering...what exactly did that article say? All the research I have done so far has yielded positive views on homeschooling. Every study that I have come across has shown me the good sides. I wonder about the negative studies.
I'd like to read some of them, just so I can be prepared if anyone every tries to use those as an argument.

Really? Why couldn't they choose their own topic for a persuasive essay? Do the kids really have to be that "spoon fed" that they can't even come up with a topic on their own?
