Crystal, one thing I did (on my own) with Vol. 3 was make a Renaissance notebook. They would write the name of the artist at the top of the paper, the time frame, location, and then went on-line and printed out examples of their work. With DaVinci, we seperated his inventnions and his art work.

I will say my kids have a VERY firm grasp of the kings of England from the War of the Roses through William and Mary! Oh, and we read the Prince and the Pauper out loud.

Jackie...Well the reason I'm looking at the supplement pack is there are coloring pages (which I find extremely helpful during read alouds with my boys) and all kinds of other little things. And as much as I love free...I just don't have the time as much since my parents need more of my time. I'm sure if I had the time I could hunt down or make many free resources to go with...I just don't think I'll have the time.

It also includes notebooking pages which I really like....

I'm torn, I'd really love to do something simple and free but...on the other hand, if I want to get through all 4 volumes twice with both kids, I'd really need to start this year...I still haven't decided if I'm going with just free public domain living books or MoH...LOL

Yeah, I think I could have used the coloring pages when I first started. That would have been nice! I would go on-line and find some history pages for Phillip to color while I did the reading.

I'm just looking at time saving measures so I'm not so stressed...I know I could easily put together my own free coloring pages and lapbooks and such but the time it would take to do so...might be worth it to me at this stage in our lives to pay for it to be all laid out for me.

Teacher mom-I don't know The supplemental CD has Coloring Pages, Challenge Cards, Notebooking Pages, and a complete Folderbook (lapbook) set...

Josie so that means less mess click and print? nice!
they did not have one of those offered when we got the red book. This year we are using Exploring World History and ds recalls some of what he learned for the Renn. period so I am glad!
ALso with SOTW as reading oriented story style we liked that one because ds could sit and just read it, we actually lost it at the last month of school found it a few months later when we got the boys new beds lol. Ds had taken it to bed to read as a novel style reading book.
The activity guide we had was a thick inch anda half work book that I mostly printed out of so CD sounds like a good thing then.

We are using Story of the World too. I don't know anything about MoH. I like Story of the World as a guide as to what should be taught. I find the best thing is to go to the library and check out a bunch of books on certain history topics and just let my kids read them. My kids really love the You Wouldn't Want to Be series. I hated history as well as a child, but am enjoying it as an adult. I think because things make more sense after maturing and experiencing the world as an adult. I also bought the AP World History Exam review book to guide me as to what I should teach in regards to vocabulary and concepts. That has helped me a lot. There's so much in history that it's hard to know what to focus on.

From my experience, there is not one perfect history program. :)

Ok so I wanted to update, I did go with MoH and I did splurge for the supplemental pack.

    It includes:
The Mystery of History Volume 1 - Coloring Pages $14.95
The Mystery of History Volume 1 - Challenge Cards $14.95
The Mystery of History Volume 1 Notebooking Pages - (4 Files) $19.95
The Mystery of History Folderbook, Volume 1, Qtr. 1 $12.00
The Mystery of History Folderbook, Volume 1, Qtr. 2 $12.00
The Mystery of History Folderbook, Volume 1, Qtr. 3 $12.00
The Mystery of History Folderbook, Volume 1, Qtr. 4 $12.00

The notbooking pages are my favorite-it's great because they have several versions of the notebooking pages and even one version where you can type on them for you own questions/prompts!

I would say if you're on the fence about spending the money on the supplemental pack, if you're pressed for time in putting lessons together or not one who can whip up their own worksheets, it's worth it. (for the sale price at least-$60) It really fleshes out the lessons.

My only complaint is there is only one coloring sheet per week, most are a collage of 2-4 drawings that cover that week's topics. Which would be great if my kids weren't so young...I'm going to try to tell the kids to only color this part or that part as I read...but I'm not sure how well that will work...esp with the 6 year old.
