I have been struggling with what we are definitely using next year. I have bounced around in pretty much everything, but today I think I have mixed and matched and have come up with exactly what we will be using! This is the first I have had that "ahhhhh" feeling when I think of my mix. This list covers all of our requirements since we have to register with the state this year.. plus some extras (doesn't say we need grammar or vocabulary). Language Arts: Reading: Read REAL books and testing on bookadventure.org, Reagan will finish HOP and also they will continue to use readingeggs.com Writing: Scott Foresman's FREE grammar and writing handbook (also handwriting practice as needed) Spelling: www.k12reader.com's free spelling program along with their reading comp that goes with it. Vocabulary and will also cover Reading stragegies and story elements: free McGraw/Hill On Level Practice Books Math: McRuffy for Reagan and McRuffy or Math Mammoth for Rylee (we will try to bring her back to McRuffy when Reagan starts the 2nd grade book in the fall, he is flying through the first grade doing 2 and 3 lessons a day!, Ry just started MM grade 1 and I hope do get her through grade 2 before Reagan is ready for McRuffy 2) They will also be using xtramath and other online games, thought about dreambox, but don't have the money for it right now. History The Complete Book of United States History as a spine rounded out with videos, living books, and hands on activities Geography The Complete Book of Maps and Geography, possibly starting the Which Way USA books or the Top Secret Adventure series by the end of the year (I have both of these hoarded here and am dying to start one or the other) Civics Since this is required by law, and I found these great (sort of outdated here and there..lol) workbooks for a few cents each at some odd ball 5 and dime store we will use Citizens Now workbooks scattered throughout the year. Science The Complete Book of Science as our spine rounded out like history. Music www.classicsforkids.com and we will try to do the recorder again... I need earplugs lol Art The Complete Book of Arts and Crafts and interest led. Phys Ed and Health/Safety Yoga Kids DVDs, Karate for Kids DVDs, Ballet and other dance DVDs, along with active outdoor play. Health is intertwined in the science book, and we practice safety every day.
Wow! You are so composed and have got it together! I'm still completely lost and bouncing around from one thing to another! I'm impressed.
We use Total Language Plus, which covers everything, including reading, spelling, vocabulary, comprehension, grammar, research papers, and essays (I LOVE this language arts program). We use Apologia for science, and teaching textbooks for math. For history, we just use the library, internet, and other resources. Plus, the kids study Awana every day, and play sports throughout the year.
I'm not as put together as I sound lol. I have changed my mind 100 times and then-some. My3, you plan looks pretty solid I prefer to put things together myself, and we aren't Christian so we do not use anything Christian based in our schooling, though I have drooled over Apologia wishing we had. a secular alternative to it.
Yay! Where's the party smiley?? Oh, yeah...that's not here. Bummer! Two corrections though (not that I'm pickin' on you by any means! )....can you redo the link for the K12 spelling? It's not working and I wanna see it. Also, I don't think you mean The Complete Book of Math for Science. Or maybe....but that would be weird to me.
I was just so excited that for the first time in a few years, I actually felt certain of what we will be using. I think the past 3 or so years I have bounced from this to that because something else was the in thing so it had to be better. Please forgive my fingers for their mess ups
No big deal...thanks for fixing that link. I'm gonna take a good look at that tomorrow (as well as your other links too).
