We have used math u see since the beginning.. My daughter is ending her 6th grade year and finishing up the fraction book.. She is asking me to change her math program next year.. She feels like the book is too redundant.. I'm afraid to change programs because we haven't got to decimals just yet and most text books her grade level are going to assume that she has some knowledge of decimals already.. I don't know if we should change just yet or not.. I'm thinking that maybe the newer book with the enrichment pages will help.. I just don't know how to handle this.. I do have an Abeka math curricula that someone gave me that I can play around with if I need to. But I'm really leaning towards purchasing the newest MUS books and see how it goes.. I'm not too good at math so the thought of having to teach my daughter without the help of a DVD is scary.. I've heard that Teaching Textbooks is awesome, but the price is too much for our budget.. To make a long story short, I need some advice.. Thanks :)

Can you afford the Life of Fred Decimals & Percent book? It's painless and will get her up to speed over the summer or the next few weeks then you can move into something new.

I think I would tell her you will change AFTER the decimal part.

I second this. If you order from z-twist books it's only $19. They offer free shipping via media mail in the US. It normally takes about 10 days or so for me to get my books.

My daughter LOVES LOF! In fact, I'm getting ready to order her a t-shirt for her birthday (she's just a little bit nerdy, though) :)

Can she just skip over parts that she already knows?

I would either tell her that she can change after Zeta, or use something specifically to cover those topics. Math Mammoth dark blue books and the Key to series come to mind. They're both very affordable, and you can pick just the topics she needs to cover before moving on to pre-algebra.

I was JUST telling my husband that the girls have been begging me to buy LOF.. We read through some of the samples online and they really liked it.. I'm thinking that we will skip through this math book by doing one page of new lesson and a page of review.. IF she can do the new lesson and that one page of review in each section, we will move on. If not we will do the rest of the new lesson pages.. I'm fairly confident that she can do the work.. I do NOT want to skip decimals.. This is one of the cons to MUS.. It's one subject in each book instead of a mixture of things.. It's good on one hand, but can be bad on the other if you want to switch to another curriculum or put them back into school.. BUT when they finish a book they REALLY KNOW the stuff..

Can you use Khan Academy (free) for decimals over the summer and buy TT used?

What's worked for us is combining LOF with Key To...Series. Very affordable, very focused, self-teaching, and can be completed fairly quickly.

I did an assessment today and she is NOT ready to rush through the book she is in.. She's just doing the math because it's assigned and not trying to apply it to her memory bank.. So We discussed some things today and decided that we would work on this book until I felt she might be ready to move more quickly and then she would move into the next MUS book but she is also going to use LOF which made her feel a little bit happier about using the same math program..

If she hasn't grasped fractions start with that LOF book.
