Wow.. wonder what they can do to books that we have in our kindle aps on devices that are not kindle.. like on our pcs or androids.
When you buy a Kindle book, Amazon knows if you read it. They know if you read some and stop, and if so, where. Take that one step further, if a teacher is teaching a class, the ability exists for the teacher to know if his students actually read the pages he set. That isn't available currently, but it could be in the future. The technology is there already.
It never dawned on me that this could happen. That's really scary. I love the idea of ebooks..... this is actually going to make me reconsider that.
Most of my ebooks are epub version and they are stored on CDs besides on my tablet... I'm too afraid I will lose my tablet or break it or who knows, but I don't want to lose all my books. I use calibre to change formats of them when I want to move them from place to place
[Just so there's no misconception: This story is 4 years old. But it came up in conversation today and I thought about it again. eReaders have come a long way in 4 years and a lot more people have them now. I figured I'd throw this out there as an FYI for those who rely on their eBooks for school.]
This is why my dh doesn't do ebooks. He's always said that he wants to pay for a book once and have it forever. "Buying" an ebook on Amazon is like a rental with an open agreement for them to take it back whenever they want. I don't do ebooks because I don't have a reader, don't have time to read, and prefer paper.
I love my Kindle, but can't imagine relying on it for school. I still prefer real books, but the Kindle is SO handy to take wherever you may be going. I have put some books we were reading for literature on it.
Yup, won't buy e-books, movie downloads, or music downloads. Not only do I loathe the idea of being dependent on technology, but it doesn't seem like you really own anything. I like being able to hold something in my hands, sell it, share it, or give it away if I'd like. The idea of what government or businesses could do with control over that sort of thing in the future is scary too. The only things I download on my generic reader are the free PDF books available online, like old classics and such.
I think it's hilarious that they did that with 1984!! LOL!!!! Isn't that the book all about big brother watching you. Ha, ha, still laughing!! Sorry... but the comment is true. It's so easy to loose things when all you have is digital.
I don't have a digital reader, and I don't really think I will be getting one any time soon. The prices, the inconsistency, and the fact that I like having something real in my hands all makes me rather paper books. Although...if someone wants to GIVE me one, I'd take it!
