I was talking to ds17 about math for next year. I had planned to do TT Pre-Cal. He wants to do trigonometry instead. He is not super strong in math. As I've thought about it, I'm wondering if we should even go more of a Consumer Math route. He will likely attend a community college before transferring to a four-year college or university. Some type of communication arts degree is what he is planning right now. Any thoughts? Any suggestions for a good curriculum for with of those since TT will be out?
I can't recommend anything, because I haven't used anything. I can give you some links I've stored in my favorites over the years, though: http://www.glencoe.com/sites/alabama/teacher/mathematics/index.html http://interactmath.com/Home.aspx http://letshomeschoolhighschool.com.../wpbdm-category/multi-subject-and-other-math/ http://www.thinkwellhomeschool.com/ http://www.brightstorm.com/math/ http://www.purplemath.com/ http://www.artofproblemsolving.com/Alcumus/Introduction.php
We are doing Consumer style one too. Next year he wants to start his own business so he wants to take a business course of math. I am not sure what he will use for it though so I will keep this option to view open!
You could do a Dave Ramsay homeschool course along with Mental math(Great Courses). I did that with my oldest and she loved it. It was good for her too.
All my kids are doing the Dave Ramsey course next year (except the 6 year old)..... that is in addition to regular math as it is a year long course. Our local HS is now requiring Personal Finance for graduation.... took them long enough.. but it's only a semester course and my 17 year old didn't learn anything in it at all.
I decided to check to see if there are any differences in MS and TX requirements. We lived in TX when I planned out ds's high school courses, but have lived in MS for the last year. MS highly recommends a 4th upper level math for college bound students. So... I'm torn. And.... I have to plug in MS History, too. He and dd14 will be doing that together.
I would take a look at what the community college requires, as well as some other colleges he might go to. I have a personal beef with high schools requiring all these upper level math courses. If you are not going into a math field, those courses are painful, not needed, and take up time you could spend on more valuable courses for your career. If the community college doesn't require an upper level math, I'd do Dave Ramsay's course or a consumer math course. It's so much more relevant to life than calc or trig would be to him! Gosh, if Dave Ramsay was around when I was younger, I would have saved THOUSANDS on my financial mistakes!!
Both Abeka & BJU have a Consumer Math Course. Although we didn't use it this year in our Computer Virtual Life Class at our coop, as one of the teachers, I got a good look at it. My oldest wants to be a chef and will be going to cooking school as opposed to college, so I think for her Sr. Year, I'll have her do one of those...I think it would help her a lot, to be prepared to be on her own, be in business, etc.
