So this year I used My Father's World ECC with my kids and we enjoyed it for the most part. I really thought we'd still use MFW but I've been really questioning that idea lately and I started looking at MOH and I have to admit that I am really drawn to it. And it surely doesn't hurt that the price is definitely right! lol So- any info or opinions on MOH would be great! Also, I don't have a real grasp on the timeline figures- tell me about them if you could.
I tried MOH last year (after using ECC the year before) and I felt like it wasn't deep enough. I had to add a lot of outside resources. For me, the text was dry and my kids were bored with it. We went back to MFW this year.
Tell me about MFW, please. We are using SOTW, but I am not crazy about how much time they spend telling the kids about false gods
Love it, love it, love it! Tif said that she felt it "wasn't deep enough". I'm betting she had Vol. 1. It's a little light, Vol. 2 is a bit heavy, and Vol. 3 finally is "about right", lol! But even with Vol. 1, we really covered a lot. MOH really depends on how much you want to put into it. You can just read the selections and follow the ideas, and it's not teacher-intensive at all. Or you can add to it as much as you want, and really get into the subject.
We enjoy MOH. We listen to the audio file, I write notes on the board, and the kids write them in their notebook. We do a simple version of the timeline by taping 8 1/2 x 14 pages together and fan fold. I allow them to do all the exercises and tests open book. We discuss things as we go, and point out when we run across references to history we have studied. I'd love to find a similar program for US History.
I am planning on using MOH next year but I also will be supplementing with SOTW too, at least I think. I keep going back and forth on next year.
Like Jackie, we love it, love it, love it! lol With the activity book full of ideas and additional references, there was plenty for us to work with.
So to you lovers of MOH tell me about how you constructed your timeline. I do own this HUGE Book of Centuries from Simply Charlotte Mason that we have yet to use but I also like the idea of having it on the wall. AND I have yet to lay hands on MOH to see the directions ect. Also, is anyone interested in selling Vol 1?
MFW is a great Christian curric and we were blessed by it. It uses living books and has plenty of hands on activities. For me I felt too tied down and structured and so we are moving on to a different approach. What would you be starting with? We own ECC and I might be interested in selling it if you are interested.
You can do your timeline however you wish. I actually don't do it now, though I wish I did. I did for Vol. 1. We started with a timeline book (see http://donnayoung.org/history/timeline-cw.htm ), but then went to a big wall in the kitchen. It ended up just being a Biblical, Old Testament timeline, and covers the whole wall. We've also done a US History timeline http://www.homeschoolspot.com/showthread.php?t=20174 If I were to do an MOH wall timeline again, I'd do it this way. I go on-line, and do a picture search for a certain topic or person. I find the picture I want, paste it into my Word program, and then reduce it to the size I want. Print it out, cut it out, and glue it on. I would suggest, if you do a timeline, either glue something on each time (which is very easy to forget/put off), or just plan on Fridays being Timeline Day, where you go on-line to search for your pictures, etc. Oh, I also use rubber cement. It works better for me than glue, but that just may be the teacher training I had way back when, lol! ETA: Phillip was little when we originally started MOH, like preschool/kindergarten. We recently started through them a second time with him, and he's finished Vol. 1, and is into Vol. 2. So I said out loud, "Do I want to sell MOH 1...?" My husband never ceases to surprise me. He's in the other room, cooking breakfast. He heard me, and told me straight out that he didn't want me selling it. He wants us to keep all the volumes!!! (Not sure why, but that's OK. I HAVE been known to refer to something in them every now and then.)
Our timeline is very simple. We just list the lesson events in order presented and draw something underneath. Sometimes it is simply stick figures and other times more detailed. We just keep ours fan folded in the supply closet, but I do like to bring it out and show off what we've done to friends and family from time to time. We each have our own time line. I've enjoyed making one with them.
I love that your husband was interested enough to not want you to sell it! I love the idea of "timeline day." I may just implement that! Thank you!
MFW does use SOTW as one of its history texts in Rome to the Reformation, Exploration to 1850, and 1850 to Modern Times. Vol. 1 is NOT used with Creation to Greeks (ancients).
I'm going to use my CM BoC with MoH. We've started lesson 1 just to get a feel for it when we got it...but that's all we've done so far. I did buy the supplemental pack download. And I really like it. Using it, and maybe some other free supplements I scrounge up for free on the internet, I think we're going to dig a bit deeper than the book goes and stretch it out to two years of history.
