Ok, I guess I neverlooked far enough into their sample... I have looked at it over and over and every time I am looking at the beginning of level 1. It seems I am looking at the explaination of how to use it? But it says The First Day and has this long spiel, then Second Day has a long spiel... and I say man I can not imagine reading all of this every day.... so I guess that is my bad there
Oh... yeah... ignore the first few pages. That's in all of them, and it's really not necessary at all.
I actually wrote about this on my blog: http://morethanmommmy.blogspot.com/2013/04/playing-to-learn.html
That's because reading is decoding and spelling is encoding. Two totally different things. Not that I'm telling you (I'm sure you know), just commenting.
I'm trying to decide what to do for my youngest for spelling. I tried SS years ago with my ds....but it never seemed to work for him. I'm actually going to try Apples and Pears (hoping a morpheme approach will work for him...he's almost 18 and still can't spell if his life depended on it), and I thought I'd just get another set of A&P workbooks for dd too. Prior to that idea I thought of trying SS with her. But, I just don't know..... You didn't get the DVD's then?
I finally found a way to make Sequential Spelling work for us. I'm using their Individualized Spelling program. The words my son misspelled required more than just doing the patterns in the regular Sequential Spelling book and it had us practicing lots of words he could already spell. Individualized Spelling is targeting words and patterns that he finds difficult and we are having success. He enjoys it too. There are some words he needs to practice over 100 times to change the way he uses the word in his everyday writing. This program allows him to do that. Also, he may spell some easy words incorrectly and more difficult words correctly so I can customize the program to him. The sentences can be pretty bizarre in the Individualized Spelling program though
No, the DVDs were more than I could afford right now, and just wanted to try the program anyway. Sequential Spelling is working for us now, but I don't know if I'll end up having to add the DVDs or other practice at some point or not? There is something about putting the word parts in color on the board, and building longer words out of the base words just turns something on in my oldest's brain. It is almost like spelling suddenly clicked for him.
I only briefly skimmed the oher replies, sothese may have already been mentioned, but I have a similar issue and I'm debating between Spelling Power, so she doesn't get bored practicing words she already knows, and All About Spelling - a multi-sensory approach to keep her from getting bored, but yet REALLY teaching the "rules/exceptions" of spelling.
