This seems like a silly question. But what do you do for reading in grade 3? In a perfect world, I would like him to read books he likes, and tell me about them. Do a few proper book reports through the year, and that would cover it. However, my DS seems stuck. He read a few geronimo stilton books, but now seems like he can't find anything he doesn't get stuck on or hate. He doesn't like the ghost stories and spooky stuff that a lot of the G.S books have, so he says he's done with those too. Since I'm having so much trouble getting him reading these days, should I be looking into a reading program or school style reader with activities? What would you do?
Rylee isn't into reading either. I will pick a few books at her level (maybe a hair higher) and let her pick from my little stack. She has to read 20 minutes each day, like it or not..lol. When she finishes I have her test on www.bookadventure.org which is free... and they have most books. There haven't been many we didn't find on there. We also discuss the books a bit too from time to time, but not all of them.
We LOVE Book Adventure. I find that alot of leveled readers are on there. And they are usually short enough that my daughter can read the whole book in a couple of days, then take a test. My suggestion is to "shop around" and find something that he would like. Right now for my daughter it is Star Wars Clone Wars (go figure?! LOL). So I went to Paperbackswap.com and got several of the level readers about Star Wars. And she id reading them all the time Let me know if you need help with Paperbackswap.com
My 2nd grader loved the Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing series... which includes SuperFudge, Otherwise Known as Sheila the great. We take turns reading a chapter a day. He reads a page or two, I read a page or two. I quiz him on the chapters we read at the end of the week when he does a weekly test.
I agree about bookadventure.org! They have alot of tests. My kids liked these series: Junie B. Jones, Magic Treehouse, Hank the Cowdog Later: Redwall, Tuckett's Travels, graphic novels. Also, my ds is the reader and we used BJU reading for 5th and 6th grade for him. There will come a point where you have to throw in some classics. I also like reading comprehension workbooks where they read a passage and answer questions. This gets them ready for standardized testing.
We used Sonlight and found that some of dd's favorite books were ones she would have never read on her own. We have books that she is assigned to read and then she needs to do an additional 1/2 hr of reading whatever she wants. Right now she is into horse books.
So, I went to bookadventure. I was surprised by what is considered grade 2 reading level. I think I have been expecting too much. Now I just have to find some that he will enjoy and are at that level. I've ordered a bunch from the library. Hopefully they'll come soon! Thanks!
What a great website! I've never heard of it before. I will probably compile a list of books and allow my son to choose books from that for reading next year.
